How to Experience Madrid in One Weekend

If I had to describe my recent long weekend in Madrid with one word, I would choose the word “feast.” Not only did I eat and drink to my heart’s content, but the city also fed my soul and senses. In this multicultural city, bright squares, energetic streets, tantalizing aromas, and laughing voices followed me everywhere I went. In Madrid, there is no shortage of places to go, architecture to see, or mouthwatering bites to sink your teeth into.

There is simply more to appreciate than can be covered in one weekend; but if you only have a few days in Spain’s capital, be sure to experience a few key features. This short list has a handful of options to get you started.

Food

No trip to Spain is complete without dabbling in the cuisine. While a weekend isn’t much time to try all that the city has to offer, it is enough to get a feel for the cocina Madrileña, a blend from each Spanish region, creating a culinary melting pot in the heart of the country.

First things first: There are ways to eat for free. Yes, with each caña (a small draft beer) or glass of vino, restaurants and bars usually give you a complimentary tapa to snack on. These can be anything from nuts and french fries to rabo de toro (stewed bull’s tail), stuffed shellfish, or croquetas (croquettes) filled with either seafood or meat.

Tapas are a nice way to sample variety without poring over a menu (especially if you’re not a picky eater).

When it comes to street food, a step up from tapas are tostas, and the dish sizes are slightly larger. Literally called toasts, a tosta is a thick, long toasted bread layered with a variety of toppings. Some venues keep their tostas simple with pureed tomato, a drizzle of olive oil and a pinch of salt, or shavings of jamon (dry-cured ham). Others offer a bit more creativity, like a healthy spread of Spanish blue cheese topped with honey and nuts. You can even order toasts topped with seafood like pulpo gallego (cooked octopus, flavored with a base of olive oil and paprika) or gulas (small silvery-white fish that resemble baby eels, cooked in olive oil and spices). While I walked through the streets around El Rastro market, it seemed like one out of three people were snacking on tostas de gulas during their shopping breaks.

In dish size, after tostas are raciones, traditional items on medium-sized plates. Popular choices include huevos rotos (“broken eggs” cooked with potatoes and chorizo, Spanish sausage), patatas ali oli (potatoes in garlic mayonnaise), patatas bravas (fried, cubed potatoes served with spicy tomato-based dipping sauce), and a variety of seafood (especially grilled octopus and squid).

Sandwiches, or bocadillos, are also popular choices among bars and restaurants.

Of course, the city is a great place to find a wide range of other typical Spanish dishes, besides street food. I love meals that mix seafood with chicken, pork and red meat, so paella was a no-brainer that I enjoyed the day I arrived. Cocido Madrileño (pork stew, slowly simmered for hours with vegetables, beans and chorizo) and tortilla (Spanish omelet, cooked with potatoes and olive oil in addition to eggs) are two more must-try dishes.

And as for sweets, my recommendation if you like fried dough is not to leave until you’ve taken a bite (or two or three) of churros that have been dipped in hot chocolate. The creamy chocolate pairs so nicely with crispy fried dough that this will be the only way I eat churros moving forward. (Adiós, cinnamon.)

Markets

It is entirely reasonable to dedicate an entire weekend to exploring the city’s food and flea and street markets, and no one would blame you if you did. Depending on where you are at the moment, these are your one-stop-shops for anything you can imagine, with fresh produce, local wines, and cultural ornaments being the tip of the iceberg.

Mercado de San Miguel

This small but popular hot spot, near the renowned city square Plaza Mayor de Madrid, is a gastronomy-lover’s dream and is well worth the time wading through busy crowds. There seems to be no end to the rows of shelves selling varieties of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, hams, tapas, entrees, and spirits, that together represent the cuisine from different regions throughout Spain. Sample olives infused with a myriad of spices, sip on sweet vermouth, try arroz negro (“black rice” cooked with octopus ink), or indulge your sweet tooth with a pudding or cake of your choice. Muy delicioso!

In the middle of the market are counters and tables where you can set down your plates and snack with ease, but space isn’t always available due to the droves of visitors. Either way, in a city where cuisine is revered, a food market of this caliber should not be missed.

Mercado de Motores

Everything about this flea market is random, from the  vendors who showcase their artwork and artisan collectibles to vintage clothing stalls and sweets. Its location in the Madrid Railway Museum (Museo del Ferrocarril de Madrid) is also unique. The building is an antique must-see, built in the 19th century and filled with historic steam and passenger trains.

Plan accordingly as the market is only open the second weekend of each month. During those Saturdays and Sundays, the trains occupy the center of the building while vendors set up shop around the perimeter. And after making your rounds, exit through the back of the museum to a “backyard” filled with food, snacks, and beverage vendors.

El Rastro

El Rastro, the oldest and largest outdoor flea market in the city with up to 3500 stands, spreads through multiple streets every Sunday from 9AM to 3PM, and on public holidays. Also located near the city center, it attracts the attention of locals and tourists alike and caters to a multitude of personalities. Do you enjoy searching for antiques? What about hand-crafted jewelry? At El Rastro, will see see these items and more (old books, video games, furniture, rugs, and second hand clothing).

Since it spans more than a couple city blocks, there are many little bars and restaurants all around where you can press pause on shopping to enjoy some beer, wine and other traditional tastes of Madrid.

Mercado de la Cebada

Take note, the Mercado de la Cebada is one of the best places for cheap seafood on Saturday evenings. If you wander the stalls as they prepare to close for the day you can purchase octopus, shrimp, and mussels for around 15 euros.

During the day, produce, deli items and seafood are just a few items sold at this site, which is located a short walk down the street from the La Latina metro stop.

Cityscapes

As you begin to walk from calle to calle (or street to street) your vision will be pleasantly assaulted by picturesque squares, beautifully manicured parks, modern shopping centers, and romantically historic buildings.

While venturing on foot, do not miss the famous Gran Via, an avenue nicknamed “The Spanish Broadway.” Just about every Google search on Madrid will bring up picture upon picture of this large road that pulsates with life. Not only is it one of the top streets for nightlife in Europe but it’s also a zone overflowing with dining choices, hotels, stores, and theaters.

Puerta del Sol (Gate of the Sun) is another gorgeous spot aptly named for its perfectly situated location that captures the sun’s rays on a bright day. This square is always packed with people, serves as a perfect location for hosting concerts, and is surrounded by important buildings, including the old Post Office which currently holds the President of Madrid’s office. Historically, it was once the eastern gate of the city. Now it is a meeting place for friends, an attraction for tourists, and the location of the city’s clock (which attracts a lot of attention on New Years Eve). It is also home of the city’s symbolic statue El Oso y El Madroño, which is a bear eating the fruit from a strawberry tree (a symbol that represents Madrid’s coat of arms), and the famous neon Tio Pepe sign.

Puerta del Sol

Lavapies is the place to go for cultural diversity and bohemian vibes. This neighborhood is home to immigrants of many different nationalities, and there are a number of ethnically-diverse restaurants sandwiched between the traditional Spanish bars, a vision that reflects its multiculturalism.

Diversity extends past Lavapies to Chueca, Madrid’s gay district. This neighborhood is home to the summertime Gay Pride Parties which attract members of the LGBT community from around the world in late June and early July. In Chueca, there is a mix of old world Spain, visible in traditional streets and buildings, and a new, modern and open-minded culture where restaurants, bars and stores focus their attentions on the progressive local community.

Crystal Palace

And the city isn’t all buildings, restaurants and stores either. Parque del Retiro (Buen Retiro Park) is a lovely sanctuary smack in the middle of Madrid. What once belonged to the Spanish Royalty is now a public park. This exquisite, large expanse of nature encompasses a number of statues (including the Fountain of the Fallen Angel, the only known public statue in the world that depicts Satan), many small gardens including the Rosaleda rose garden, a large pond, and the famous Crystal Palace.

These are my recommendations for a quick visit, and checking off each tip will certainly leave you exhausted after three days of exploring. The vibrant colors and sounds, the rich culture full of scents and tastes, and the many different people and multicultural influences will grab your attention from the moment you arrive until the time to bid hasta luego.

3 Unique Yoga Hybrids

Are you looking for new ways to spice up your asanas? If so, it’s time to join ranks with yoga pioneers, those who are breaking down the barriers of tradition and changing the face of their preferred exercise. The results are exciting, albeit unusual, and a few of these variations may remind you of circus performers with their gravity-defying stunts and acrobatic movements.

Each fluid transition turns the yogi into a captivating dancer in all three of these variations. Don’t let that discourage you from trying them for yourself, however. Every style of yoga has stages and modifications so even the most novice can feel comfortable while stretching and testing their limits. A bit of practice and mindful concentration can go a long way, and with time you too may be able to somersault, spin and leap as if you were weightless.

Acroyoga

Yoga is the name, awareness is the game, and people are never more alert than when they are in contact with other individuals. In this variation, partners support each other through stretches and poses that promote awareness of the self and others. This exercise is all about teamwork and trust. Wanderlust captures the essence of Acroyoga in this video of two skillful yogis practicing at an elevation of 11,000 feet.

Video: Wanderlust

As you will see, each partner assists the other through a series of stretches and poses that build strength, flexibility, deep breathing and mindfulness, which are all common benefits of yoga. The mover, otherwise known as the Base, guides the one being moved, known as the Flyer. The Base must focus on aligning his/her arms and legs with their torso, stacking the bones in preparation of the Flyer’s weight. The Flyer befriends gravity as he/she inverts, bends and rolls through the air, relying on the Base’s feet and hands for support. In some cases, especially when learning Acroyoga, a spotter is present. Their task is to watch over the Base and Flyer and step in if assistance is necessary. After each session, the Flyer treats the Base to Thai Massage, an ancient healing activity.

acroyoga

This is a wonderful exercise for anyone who enjoys gymnastics or acrobatics. It also suits playful personalities, and can be a great bonding experience for yoga-loving couples.

Aerial Yoga

No mat, no problem. A silk trapeze is all you need as you defy gravity and “fly” through the air. Aerial or anti-gravity yoga is a combination of Pilates, asanas, acrobatics and dance. The yogi will flow through a series of positions while sitting on, or hanging from, a hammock that has been suspended from the ceiling to a height based on the yogi’s preference (typically between the waist and shoulders).

Style varies between each school of aerial yoga. Some use the hammocks as tools to modify and dramatize routine yoga sequences. Others delve deeper into the acrobatics side.

It is believed that inverting and hanging from a hammock can lengthen the spine and provide additional assistance in toning muscles. However, the health benefits have yet to be explored, as this style only became popular over the last decade. The hammock may also be used as a prop and help some find their centers as they bend and stretch, activities that may be difficult on a mat.

Budokon Yoga

If you’ve ever watched Tai Chi, you have an idea of the fluidity observed in Budokon yoga. This is a blend of three ancient traditions: yoga, martial arts, and meditation. Unlike many modern versions of traditional yoga, these poses are not held in place. Instead, the postures are waves, flowing and ebbing from each transition to the next. Budokon has two main elements, the yoga sun salutations (which warms up the body) followed by a martial arts-inspired routine. Movements are synchronized with breath, in true vinyasa fashion.

Video: Wanderlust

Kicks, punches, and jumps all make up the martial arts portion of this exercise, which will spice up your experience and get the blood flowing in ways new to yogis. Transitions from one posture to the next are still smooth, especially when compared to typical martial arts, and movements are uninterrupted.

What’s So Great About a Mediterranean Diet?

By now, everyone has heard of the heart-healthy and cancer-fighting benefits of antioxidant-rich EVOO (extra-virgin olive oil). Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts have been shown to reduce mood disorders like depression and anxiety. We accept that leafy greens are super foods and that white bread is the enemy. Buzz of the “Mediterranean diet” may have even hovered around our heads at one time or two (or twenty). We have heard the hype, but have we absorbed the message?

greece santorini

It is no secret that the Mediterranean countries have cultivated one of the healthiest diets in the world. In 2015, six of these nations were listed among the 20 healthiest in the world, with Italy, Spain, France and Greece dominating most lists from year to year. Lower rates of cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, obesity, and stroke have been observed in the communities that stick to this regimen on a daily basis.

The food is also among the most delectable on our palates. Dining out tops our lists of “things to do” while traveling to this region and we tackle the task with ardor. Pizza and pasta in Italy? Absolutely. Paella in Spain? Bring it on!

Adopting this lifestyle can be one of the healthiest changes to our routine. These tips will jump start your way to enjoying clean, Mediterranean cuisine, daily.

Design your meals around the Mediterranean Diet Food Pyramid

mediterannean diet

A food pyramid is a helpful device used to break down daily, weekly and monthly dietary requirements. The best part about the Mediterranean Food Pyramid is that nothing is left behind.

Fruits, vegetables, legumes and a choice of complex carbohydrates comprise the spine that holds the rest of the diet together. Each of these food groups should be consumed with every meal.

Fish, poultry, and eggs are viewed as supplementary choices, enjoyed 2-3 times per week. Baked sweets can be relished a few times per week as well.

Red meats are treated as special treats, to be saved for special occasions, including holidays.

Moderate red wine consumption also makes up part of this lifestyle and Mediterranean folks can be true connoisseurs. The MVP here is resveratrol, an antioxidant linked to lowering bad cholesterol, raising good cholesterol and preventing blood clots. A maximum of one to two glasses per day is recommended for the average person, and people with certain health concerns are cautioned against alcohol consumption in general.

Must-Try Recipe: The Mediterranean Platter

Cherry tomatoes

Cucumbers

Carrots (and other vegetables you prefer)

Olives

Whole wheat bread

Cheese (cubed)

Hummus

Tzatziki dip

How: Variety surely is the spice of life. It is also the keystone to Mediterranean cuisine. For lunch, group a variety of vegetables (cherry tomatoes, chopped cucumbers, and carrots, for example), olives, small slices of whole wheat bread and cubes of your favorite cheese in individual piles around a dish. In the middle, add heaping spoonfuls of hummus, tzatziki (greek yogurt-based dip) and couscous. Not only is this meal easy and delicious, but it covers many major food groups and will introduce the best flavors from around the Mediterranean Sea into one dish.

Think of the Mediterranean Diet as less of a diet and more of a lifestyle

The word diet is plagued with negative undertones. It represents the types of food that we routinely eat, but also signifies curbing oneself to small amounts or special kinds of food. But take a look at the Mediterranean Diet Food Pyramid (above); nothing is off limits and everything is recognizable (and enjoyable).

The Mediterranean cultures love their food so much that meals are savored. Work-time lunch breaks last between 1-2 hours and social gatherings nearly always include a meal.

They are culinary masterminds behind delectables like gelato, croissants, flan, and baklava. The trick is to eat healthful, smaller portions often and reserve special treats for 2-3 times per week. By no means do you have to cut out your favorite snacks; just space them out!

Carbohydrates and fats are staples, and choosing the healthiest options is key. Olive oil is a chart topper, followed by cheese and yogurt. Shavings of Feta, Ricotta, Parmesan and Provolone will add protein, calcium and a dash of flavor to your meals. Bread and pasta can be enjoyed regularly, especially the whole grain options, and carbohydrates pair well with fiber to slow sugar absorption, preventing spikes in our bloodstream and energy levels.

The Mediterranean diet is also environmentally friendly. Take a second glance at your trusty food pyramid. This cuisine is heavy in plant-based ingredients. Not only is it life sustaining, but it is environmentally sustaining as well!

Must-Try Recipe: Paella

This isn’t the easiest recipe to master, but one that is well-worth the effort. This Spanish dish has everything that makes the Mediterranean diet unique, from an aromatic blend of herbs and spices to a rich marriage of surf and turf, cooked vegetables, and choice of grain. One of my favorite substitutions is couscous in place of rice, for a North African/Spanish hybrid. I recommend looking up different versions and choosing the one that sings to your soul.

Recipes can be simple yet effective

grilled salmon and vegetables

Eating healthy has never looked so good or been this easy. The high quantities of fresh fruits and vegetables keep the daily routines simple, and clean cooking methods can reduce your time slaving over a hot stove. Grocery store runs will also decrease when you base the majority of your shopping list to the perimeter of the store (typical areas for produce, legumes, fresh fish, meat, and dairy).

Must-Try Recipe: Grilled Salmon with a side salad

Chopped basil

Chopped parsley

Minced garlic

Lemon juice

Salmon fillets

Side salad:

Tomatoes

Cucumbers

Crumbled cheese

Sunflower seeds

Balsamic Vinegar and EVOO

How: For a quick fix, mix 3 parts of chopped basil with 1 part of chopped parsley. Add a fraction of minced garlic (1-2 cloves will suffice for two salmon fillets) and enough lemon juice to soak the spices. Rub this mixture over your salmon and grill to perfection.

A simple side salad of finely chopped tomatoes and cucumbers, basil, crumbled cheese of your choice, toasted sunflower seeds and a balsamic vinegar/EVOO dressing are the perfect accompaniment.

Herbs and spices emphasize flavor, not salt

Turkish breakfast of the beach of MarmarisDid you know that cinnamon, parsley, chile pepper and sage are among the healthiest spices in the world? They are also prominent in the Mediterranean Diet. These herbs and spices have been reported to improve brain activity, act as antioxidants and boost metabolism.

Must-Try Recipe: Mediterranean Spice Mix

*The quantities will vary depending on your personal preference. I add a higher proportion of oregano since it’s one of my favorite dried herbs.

How: Simply combine equal parts of dried parsley, basil, rosemary and garlic powder with double the amount of dried oregano. Some recipes also call for half a part of cinnamon in the mix (cinnamon is a staple in Greek cuisine). That’s all that there is to it! Store this mixture in an airtight container. A Mediterranean Spice Mix can be sprinkled over chicken, turkey and fish, acting as a seasoning and reducing the need for salt from many of your meals.

Our Picks of Must-Try Indie Makeup Brands

When it comes to makeup, most of us are willing to plunk down a pretty penny for high-quality.  I am becoming increasingly more careful about the products that touch my skin as I get older, but I have also learned that expensive does not always mean better. In a time when small businesses, artisan products and support-your-local-company trends are capturing our attentions, it seems wrong not to give indie makeup brands a try.

Indie makeup is made by small, independently-run companies, and many of them are vegan. In addition, none of the brands listed here have been tested on animals. As the internet continues to make the world seem smaller, more of these companies are popping out of the woodwork, helping to set a green example.

Have you ever needed an extra hint of brightness from your eye shadow or lipstick, but your normally trusted brand just didn’t pull through? Try an indie product! Many of these shadows, lipsticks and liners boast vibrant, eclectic and artistic shades that you may be hard-pressed to find in most stores. They  are also void of fillers or other cringe-worthy ingredients. Now that’s something to smile about.

8 Benefits Of Taking A Gap Year

Not that long ago, many Americans had no choice but to work after high school. And as a result of their own experiences and struggles, they later pushed their children to transition directly into higher education. Now, high school graduates have another option on the table – a gap year.

While popular in the UK, other European countries and Australia, gap year has yet to catch hold in the United States. Part of this reason is the distance from Europe, where the idea as we know it now was born. In some cases, the experience is different and simply misunderstood. Americans who are unaccustomed to this phenomenon may be concerned that a gap year will lead to gallivanting and trouble-making. Some see it as leisure, vacation and a waste of time.

In reality, gap year describes a period, between 7-12 months, when a student takes a break from studies to travel internationally, work, volunteer, or engage in a combination of the three. This usually refers to the time after high school and before college, but can also be applied to students between college and graduate school, and college graduates needing a break before entering the workforce. While the idea of traveling alone in a different part of the world may be different, scary or seem like squandered time,  the experience gives rise to many personal rewards. Here are a few of the benefits gained from taking a gap year.

Young adults get a chance to expand their horizons.

A gap year will introduce you to unique people and cultures. It can be used as a tool for self-discovery through a path that is illuminated by a different light. Also, the connections formed may become part of a networking system later in life.

Students become more marketable.

While taking time off of school to travel may seem frivolous to some, it shows maturity and sensibility to prospective organizations. In fact, many great universities acknowledge a gap year, including Harvard University. Many times, students pick up small jobs or volunteer opportunities while visiting other countries and hone skills that college admissions departments and future employers find valuable.

It is a chance to be immersed in a new culture.

Diversity is beautiful, and plunging into another culture will open eyes and minds to sights and stimuli that may have never before been imagined. A gap year provides a way to become aware of, and, actively participate in a new way of life, and is also a good way to learn a second or third language, which may come in handy in future employment.

Appreciation of college may increase after seeing the world.

Many students go to college unsure of what they should study, and sometimes they go to school for the wrong reasons. Taking a break and seeing the world provides a time for self-reflection. It can help answer questions like, “How will college help me to achieve my goals?” Gap year students may enter university with a fresh purpose that leads to greater focus, a dedicated work ethic and the desire to balance school with work to pay their way through, also cutting back on the need for loans.

You’ll build problem-solving skills and become able to easily adapt to changes.

Surprises and unforeseen occurrences are likely to happen when traveling to and living in another country. These times may require in-the-moment, split decisions, which will help in learning how to solve problems quickly and effectively. Also, leaving one’s comfort zone teaches adaptability, a skill which can later help in college or career in various aspects (dorm life, thesis work, sharing office space, etc.).

Experiencing a different lifestyle cultivates appreciation and willingness to help others.

We’re all aware that each person on the planet lives a different lifestyle, but there is knowing and then there is empathizing. The level of awareness that grows from experiencing a novel situation weighs greater than the awareness of something told to us.

It’s easier than you think and can be done on a budget.

Gap year is about the experience, not luxuries. Therefore, getting to, through and from different countries can be planned easily with limited finances. Non-profit and charity organizations may support gap year students who want to volunteer by finding housing or covering food expenses. Some student travelers also find jobs and work their way through the countries they visit. Visiting countries and cities with a lower cost of living, as well as sleeping in backpacker/hostel accommodations, will also shave costs.

It’s the adventure of a lifetime.

The greatest gift that anyone can give to themselves or to others is a meaningful life with a bright future. This is the point of a gap year; it is an opportunity to develop, learn and grow.

The Switch: 3 Eco-Friendly Spring Cleaning Swaps

After a long winter, our cozy homes can appear as stuffy, dusty, germ-dwelling habitats that make us want to throw open the windows and breathe in fresh air. Warmer spring sun may also shed light on the clutter that we accumulate throughout the year. For these reasons, spring cleaning is a must.

Clearing my space feels gratifying, but the trash bags of discarded belongings and spoiled food can leave a pang of guilt in my nature-loving heart. I also start questioning whether a home can really be considered clean after it has been scrubbed down with chemicals. Is the use of chemicals, plastics and paper trash the way to foster a healthy environment that we can feel confident having our children and pets run around in? If your answer to this question is a resounding NO, read on for three ecologically-friendly and healthy alternatives to your spring cleaning routine.

Switch: Bags full of waste and paper for recyclable cloths, composting and the reuse of old items

Eliminating clutter is one of the first projects many of us tackle when we spring clean. Instead of throwing unwanted items away without a second thought (adding to the growing landfill problem), first try to find ways to breathe a second life into recyclable/reusable material. Turn mismatched socks or old t-shirts into dust rags and cleaning cloths. Convert old frames and torn book covers into works of art.

The average American household throws away approximately $640 worth of old food per year, and this trash adds to greenhouse gases and other ecological problems. Rather than throwing old food away, try composting. A quick internet search can provide you with a plethora of information, from the correct way to compost to its environmental benefits.

Switch: Chemical-laden cleaning formulas for healthier (and equally reliable) alternatives made at home

If you want a healthy environment for you, your children and pets, walk away from the chemical-filled cleaners and head into the kitchen. Vinegar, baking soda, boiling water and lemons are a few common ingredients that make powerful cleaning solutions.

Any vinegar will cut grease, grime and kill bacteria, but I prefer apple cider vinegar for its pleasantly sweet scent. Apply it directly to heavily soiled areas or mix it in equal parts with water for a less abrasive cleaning solution that’s safe for many surfaces.

For wood surfaces, mix 1 part of apple cider vinegar with double parts of olive oil. The olive oil will cut the harshness of the vinegar while also polishing and conditioning the wood. You can also add lemon juice or drops of essential oils for their appealing scents (lemon will also add to the anti-bacterial properties of your cleaner). Wipe with a soft cloth (perhaps one made of the old clothes you just turned into rags), but first, as with most cleaning solutions, test a bit of this mixture on a small area. Also, don’t rub it into the wood, but wipe gently and allow your furniture to air dry.

baking soda lemon

Baking soda will also scrub away grime and deodorize. Sprinkle it on tough stains and gently wipe them away or shake some over your carpet a few minutes before vacuuming. Keep in mind that baking soda will neutralize vinegar, so mixing the two in hopes of a double-action cleaning solution won’t work. The two together will, however, unblock clogged drains when chased with boiling water.

cinnamon lemon mint

In place of air freshener, wipe a diluted mixture of essential oils to surfaces. You can also try simmering cinnamon, vanilla, a lemon peel and a little water on the stove top and let their comforting, mingled scent waft throughout your kitchen and other areas of your home (a great idea for apartments).

Switch: Plastic storage bins and containers for glass, metal or wicker

After everything has been wiped down with your chemical-free cleaning solutions, it’s time to store it all away. Unfortunately, our lives have been infiltrated with plastic, and we store everything from our food to toys and animal supplies in it. Not only is plastic unhealthy for the environment, but the chemicals used to create plastic can seep into our food.

Going plastic-free may not happen overnight, but spring cleaning is a good time to slowly begin expunging it from your home. Keep kids toys in wicker or heavy duty cardboard containers. Store your animal’s food in a glass jar.

Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, Magic Mountain Hotel, Chile

Snow White’s voice may as well drift out from one of the many windows at Magic Mountain Hotel. With a name like this, what else can you expect? Cozily settled in the Valdivian Forest, the breathtakingly beautiful Huilo Huilo is home to many different plants and animals, including the world’s smallest deer. There are other hotels located in Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve, but this one is by far the most bewitching with its volcanic-like structure covered in greenery and complete with a waterfall eruption from the top.

The Liberty Hotel, Boston, MA

At first glance, the Liberty Hotel may seem like many other luxury hotels; but upon a closer look, you will see hints of what once was the Charles Street Jail. This jail imprisoned Malcolm X, suffragists and World War II prisoners. The renovated building has maintained the original granite exterior with echoes and ghosts of old jail cells. Historic catwalks and wrought-iron bars over windows also add glimmered hints of the building’s origin, and much of the architecture reflects its 1850s history.  Nestled in the middle of Boston, this location will enhance the historic feeling that exists all around the city, with exquisite luxury included.

Gaze over Oregon’s rocky coast from inside the lightkeepers cottage. This charming bed and breakfast has earned its spot on the National Treasury of Historic Places (awarded in 1973). For over 100 years, Heceta Head Lighthouse and Keeper’s Cottage have been a beacon of light and hope for seafaring navigators, and it also enjoyed a stint as a sattelite campus. Now, this is  a romantic spot for quiet individuals who appreciate quaint country surroundings and nautical allure.

Giraffe Manor, The Safari Collection, Kenya

Take your African safari up a notch and cozy up to giraffes during breakfast. You might even want to share your meal with these majestic creatures as they poke their heads in through the windows. The hotel belongs to a group called the Safari Collection, and you can pair your stay at Giraffe Manor with many adventures from riding on camelback to a privately toured safari. Also, a percentage of the funds collected are channeled to the surrounding communities and used in maintaining this Eastern African environment. How cool is that?

6 Snowy Honeymoon Destinations

The most romantic spots are not only those sitting on tropical seas and sparkling shores. With a little imagination, and the help of Mother Nature, the coldest places on earth can also be the most amorous. Substitute white hot sand with fluffy snow. Warm up to a steaming cup of hot chocolate instead of cooling down with a piña colada.

Below are six cold destinations that are sure to heat up the honeymoons of the most adventurous spirits to the calmest souls, or simply those who love winter.

The Swiss Alps

Skiing rarely gets better than in the Alps, and Switzerland is among the most scenic destinations in the world. Step the experience up a notch in the beautiful resort village of Gstaad, which will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting.

Lapland, Sweden

Have you ever wanted to visit an ice hotel? The Lapland region in Sweden is home to the first of these accommodation types in the world, and each visit will differ from the last, since the hotel melts each spring and is rebuilt every winter.

The ICEHOTEL in Sweden, “an art exhibition and hotel made of natural ice and snow,” is the first of its kind in the world. In addition to being awed by the uniquely stunning art suites, guests can participate in ice sculpting, learn about the Scandinavian Sámi culture from native Nils Nutti (who will also let you meet reindeer), and horseback ride in the snow. Now that’s uniquely romantic.

The hotel’s design is changed by season; and in 2016 (open until March 28th this year), it’s all about rivers. As explained by Pierre l’Heureux, the hotel’s artistic director, “Man and water join forces to take you on a voyage along imaginary rivers through a world of ice and snow, as you experience the Hôtel de Glace as a river.”  It may not be traditional, but it’s certainly one way to sail off into the sunset together.
