Life is all about second chances, and The Hero offers exactly that. Lee Hayden (Sam Elliott) is an aging actor with a golden voice who tries to discover his legacy in film. Soon after finding out he has cancer, his priorities come into focus as he tries to reconnect with his daughter while looking for one more role to end his career on a higher note. Although the movie is intertwined with some darker themes, it’s an easygoing movie bound to warm your heart.

2. Gifted


Frank Adler (Chris Evans) begins raising his late sister’s daughter, Mary (Mckenna Grace), who is a spirited prodigy. While Frank has plans to give Mary a normal life and childhood, her mathematical talents capture the attention of Frank’s mother, who threatens to separate the two and spirals into a custody battle. If you love a good family drama, this one will show you how important family is.

3. Begin Again


Another story of second chances, Begin Again tells the story of Gretta (Keira Knightley) and her long-time boyfriend Dave (Adam Levine), college sweethearts and songwriters who go to New York. While in New York, Dave lands a deal with a major record label. Soon enough, he gets swept away by fame, and Gretta is left on her own in the city. Her world turns around when she meets Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a record label executive whose career has gone downhill. When Dan stumbles upon Gretta, he is captivated by her raw talent and works with her to record music using sounds of the city as the backdrop.

4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind


When Clementine (Kate Winslet) and Joel (Jim Carrey) have erased each other from their own minds, their true love begins to shine through. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind takes you on an emotional rollercoaster of love, loss, and appreciating what you have. It’s also a good reminder of how special memories are, but sometimes it’s important to move on and start with a clean slate.

5. The Giver


Remember reading Lois Lowry’s novel The Giver in middle school? Relive the story in the movie, which paints a picture of the colorless dystopia created without memories. However, everything changes when Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) begins to discover he feels different from his friends. He is assigned to be the Receiver of Memories and is trained by The Giver of Memory (Jeff Bridges). Jonas learns emotions like love and the concept of family, and soon discovers there is something wrong with their society. He also learns that emotion is necessary to truly living life.

6. While We’re Young


It’s easy to let life pass you by, especially when we’re stuck in the motions. While We’re Young captures the FOMO of a childless New York married couple in their mid-40s, John (Ben Stiller) and Cornelia (Naomi Watts). While all their friends are having kids, John and Cornelia begin hanging out with a younger hipster couple, Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). Soon enough, the older couple grasps onto the energy of their hipster counterparts and they foster a friendship, until John begins to find out Jamie isn’t as trustworthy as he once thought.

7. Seeking a Friend for the End of the World


It’s always scary to think about what would happen if the world came to an end tomorrow. When an asteroid nears earth, Dodge (Steve Carell) embarks on a journey to find his high school sweetheart after being left by his wife. In the meantime, he meets his neighbor, Penny (Keira Knightley), who eventually joins Dodge on his journey to find his sweetheart. Along the way, they fall in love as they head into the final days of the world.
