What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Here comes the bride… and here comes the indecision about what on Earth you should wear to her ceremony. There’s something so beautiful about saying “I do” surrounded by fallen leaves and rustic burlap decor; but figuring out what to wear to a fall wedding can prove a little tricky. If you’ve RSVP’d to an autumn affair, then these styling ideas are sure to inspire.

8 Classic Outfit Formulas for Fall Wedding Guests

1. Subtle Metallics

When it comes to weddings, there are only a couple of outfit rules for guests: don’t wear white, and don’t try to upstage the bride. Solid metallics are an excellent way of dressing up without looking too flashy. Avoid wearing all-over sequins or embellishments, and stick to simple silver, gold, rose gold, or bronze designs instead.

2. Something Blue

Blue is a universally flattering shade, and it’s a great way to add a color pop to your favorite LBD. Use navy, cobalt, and sapphire as accent colors to strategically freshen up a tried-and-true wardrobe staple.

3. Beyond-Basic Black

Speaking of LBDs, a black dress is a versatile choice for weddings year-round — but it’s especially ideal for fall and winter events. Upgrade the effect with fringe, ruffles, or eyelet for a more eye-catching presentation.

4. Lovely Layers

With fall weddings, it’s a bit challenging to predict what kind of weather conditions you’ll encounter on the big day. That’s why it’s smart to create an ensemble that includes a few luxe layers. Comfy longline cardigans are perfect additions to silky gowns, while velvety kimonos give chiffon party dresses a little bohemian flair. Attending a fancy ceremony on a chilly evening? Top off your look with a satin jacket or a faux fur coat.

5. Intricate Textures

Fall is all about texture, and weddings are the time to show off your faves. Go the feminine route with lace, add a touch of plush with velvet, or twirl around in satin flounce. The exception to the rule? Just say no to faux leather, unless it’s a motorcycle-themed fall wedding (in which case, do your thing).

Add a pretty skirt, tie on a neck scarf, layer on jewelry, or wear a sparkly pair of high heels to take these cold-weather essentials to the ceremony and beyond.

Our Favorite Lightweight Sweaters to Transition into Fall

It’s almost that time of year again, when you’re freezing in the morning and sweating by the afternoon. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably craving the cool weather by now and the chance to wear your favorite cozy sweaters.

The key to finding the perfect lightweight sweater is all in the material. Cotton, linen, and silk are all materials that will keep you perfectly comfortable and not too hot or  cold. Plus, cotton is one of the most common sweater materials, so you’ll find lots of lightweight sweater options at all of your favourite stores. Simpler still, we’ve rounded up our favorite lightweight sweaters and sweatshirts to help you transition from summer to fall weather without sweating your life away!

The Cropped Sweater

A cropped sweater is perfect for summer-fall transition weather because it keeps you warm without covering your body in too much material. Showing a little bit of skin keeps the look summer-y while the sweater silhouette keeps you looking and feeling appropriate for the upcoming season. I’d pair a cropped sweater with leggings, my favourite booties, a wicked pair of sunglasses, and a chic backpack! The sweater above is from the Yeezy Season 1 Collection and can be paired with just about anything, making it the perfect addition to your wardrobe!

The Cardigan Sweater

There’s nothing like a good cardigan, in the Summer and in the Fall. Cardigans are especially perfect for transitional weather because you can wear something light underneath while still having the option for warmth. Dressing between seasons is all about layering, and a cardigan is the perfect piece for it. I love pairing cardigans with ripped jeans, aviator sunglasses, tan booties, and a fun bag (I’m obsessed with fringe)! This beautiful white cardigan is from Free People and is made out of 100% cotton. This piece can be dressed up or down, and can be worn both day and night.

The Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is probably my all-time favourite thing to wear. Sweater dresses are the ideal piece to wear when you’re unsure what the weather will be like throughout the day; on a cool morning a sweater dress can keep you warm, and on a balmy afternoon your bare legs can catch some rays! Nine times out of ten I pair my sweater dresses with thigh high or knee high boots – those are especially great for cooler weather because you can still show a little skin on your legs without freezing. I’d also pair this look with oversized sunglasses and a fun bag: how good is this fluffy bag from MANGO? I think I have to order it right now. (This sweater dress can be found at Shein.)

The Night Out Sweater

It can be hard to find a sweater for a night on the town that doesn’t look too casual. But this sweater from TopShop is the perfect thing to wear for a night out because the lace detailing up the front of the sweater makes your entire look sexy and more than appropriate for a nighttime event. The lace up detail also helps to cinch in the waist to accentuate your curves! This sweater would be perfectly paired with leather jeans, a simple clutch, pointy-toed pumps, and a red lip.
