Spring 2018 Makeup: the ‘It’ Look and How to Achieve It

Spring is here, and a new season brings new trends. Trends aren’t just limited to fashion, either. There are also new beauty trends popping up all the time, even if it doesn’t feel like it, since most of us wear the same makeup every day, whether we’re going to the beach or attending a gala (guilty). Alas, spring makeup is alive and well.

Surprisingly, most makeup trends are inspired by the designers and runway shows of fashion month. These trends are then perpetuated by celebrities and influencers, and the next thing you know, everyone is rocking the same elements that create an “it” look.

There were many beauty looks seen on the runway this past SS/2018 fashion month, including glitter eyeliner (hello, early 2000s!), pastel eyeshadows, bold under-eye liner, and even yellow eyeshadow — something we didn’t think anyone could wear without looking insane until we saw it with our own eyes.

While I could teach you how to do one of these bold spring makeup looks, I think it’s best to collect the most common element from the shows and create a look that’s wearable day-to-day without your significant other/co-workers/friends thinking you’ve gone mad.

Let’s call this spring it look… glow-n-glitter.

The product breakdown — Bali Body BB Cream, e.l.f Dewy Drops, NYX Wonder Stick, Essence Sun Club Shimmer Bronzer, Glossier Boy Brow, NYX Pigments, L’Oreal Lash Paradise, Gigi Hadid x Maybelline Taura Lipstick, Fenty Killawatt Trophy Wife Highlight.

Here’s how to achieve it this spring makeup look.

  1. Start by creating the perfect glowing base. To do so, mix BaliBody BB Cream (I like this one because it has some bronzer in it) and a few drops of e.l.f Dewy Drops (one of my fav makeup products ever).
  2. To add some dimension to your face, grab your favorite contour product — I like the NYX Wonder Stick in the shade Universal when I’m doing a glowy look. Contour your cheekbones, jawline, and the upper portion of your forehead, and blend until you can’t blend anymore.
  3. To add more of a glow, pick up a shimmer bronzer and apply it all over, focusing mostly on the areas you just contoured.
  4. The days of the perfect Instagram brow are long over, and fluffy, natural looking eyebrows are in. Brush your eyebrows up using your go-to tinted eyebrow mascara. Boy Brow by Glossier is a favorite of many beauty bloggers and celebs.
  5. Apply some glitter to your eyelids. NYX has beautiful pigments in a variety of different colors. For this look, stick to neutrals like gold, champagne, or peach. You may need an eyeshadow primer to prevent fallout.
  6. Top off your glitter eye look with the best mascara ever: L’Oreal Lash Paradise. According to a commercial I saw, they sell this mascara once every six seconds. I’ve used this almost every day since it came out and I’m still impressed by it. It makes your eyelashes look fanned and fluffy and is very buildable, making it the perfect one-coat wonder, or six-coat stunner. (I just made up that little verse, but really, it’s that good.)
  7. For the lips, stick to something nude and neutral, and top with your favorite glitter gloss. Gigi Hadid’s Maybelline lipsticks don’t disappoint, and the Taura shade is the perfect cool-toned pink nude. I also still have a thing for Victoria’s Secret lip glosses. I swear, they’re the shiniest.
  8. Lastly, set it all off with a highlighter. While normally I’d tell you to pick whatever you like/already have, I highly recommend Fenty Beauty Killawatt Highlighter in the shade Trophy Wife, because everyone is wearing it, and it really takes the glow-n-glitter trend to the next level. The yellow tone makes it a little bolder than a regular highlighter and people will just know it’s the on-trend Fenty product.
  9. To complete the entire look, set with a dewy setting spray. If you have oily skin, I’d skip the dewy spray and apply a matte spray instead. I love the Hard Candy setting sprays for this. (I spray the brightening dewy one all over my body in the summer months.)

9 Spring Shoes Every Woman Needs

Spring is a time for new beginnings, and there’s no better way to give your wardrobe a fresh start than by stocking your closet with some new spring shoes. Give those winter ankle boots and over-the-knee designs a much-deserved vacation, and put your best foot forward in this season’s latest styles.

9 Spring Shoes You’ll Want to Spring For

1. Nude Pumps

H&M Pumps, $24.99

Nude pumps are great for two main reasons: They go with anything and everything in your closet for endless styling possibilities, and they make your legs look ridiculously long. Wear them with little white dresses, little black dresses, and pretty much everything in between.

2. Sneakers

spring shoes

Thanks to the ever-growing popularity of athleisure style, casual sneakers are more versatile to wear than ever before. Basic tennis shoes add a modern aesthetic to your most feminine sundresses, and they’re a natural fit with traditional tees and denim cut-offs.

3. Ankle-Strap Sandals

spring shoes

J.Crew Ankle-Strap Sandals, $158

Cropped spring pants and jeans demand eye-catching shoes, and ankle-strap sandals are a stylish solution. Choose a pair of flat sandals for all-day comfort, or try a block heel for just the right amount of lift. Brown and black are your go-to minimalist shades, but animal print gives basic styles an extra kick.

4. Statement Flats

spring shoes

J.Crew Gingham Ankle-Wrap Flats, $138

Everyone loves the feel of flats, but they can sometimes leave you wanting more — especially if you’re used to wearing high heels. Elevate your footwear the practical way with chic details. From ribbon straps and cherry prints to eternally chic gingham, the everyday flat has never looked better.

5. Metallic Heels

spring shoes

J.Crew Factory Mirror Metallic High-Heel Sandals, $188

Every woman needs a dressy metallic heel for summer weddings, special occasions, and those frustrating (and all-too-frequent) times when you just can’t find the right pair of shoes to go with a particular outfit.

6. Two-Tone Styles

spring shoes

Elsie Cap-Toe Pumps, $258

This colorful season is the prime time to mix prints, and a pair of two-tone heels taps into that creative energy. You’ll be surprised at how often you’ll reach for these unique accessories, and they can upgrade your go-to look with ease.

7. Ballet Flats

spring shoes

J.Crew Camille Ballet Flats in Satin, $148

Much like nude high heels, a blush-colored ballet flat is the picture of versatility. Unlike nude high heels, they’re actually comfortable to wear. Try a satin finish or a perforated design for a more seasonal approach to this footwear essential.

8. Mules

spring shoes

Vince Camuto Kirstie Slip-On Loafer, $98.95

Slides (AKA mules) are officially the shoes of the season, which means that your work wardrobe is about to get a laid back makeover. Plus, slip-on loafers make getting dressed at 6 a.m. slightly more bearable. Slightly.

9. Espadrilles

spring shoes

Sole Society Tall Linen Wedge, $94.95

If you tend to gravitate toward more casual styles, the espadrille is the spring shoe for you. Try a flat or wedged design depending on your preferences, and wear these charmers with your favorite cuffed jeans and slouchy chinos.

2017 Spring Fashion Color Palette

Following a season of dreary skies and muted colors, many are anticipating the greeting of spring with its newness of life and invigorating colors. The release of each fashion powerhouse’s spring collection determines what colors we’ll be sporting in the upcoming season. This year, the runways have spoken and their stories made one thing clear: almost anything goes. Earthy shades converged with vibrant tones to give us a full range of colors running the gamut of, well, the rainbow itself. Read on for our  2017 spring color palette broken down for your wardrobe needs.

Hello to Yellow

Who knew there could be so many variations of yellow? This year’s designers explored every possibility: tempered yellows are seen embracing honey hues while other vibrant yellows loudly made their presence known in statement-making trenches and dresses. Such a broad spectrum makes this color appealing to the masses.

Tickled Pink

Remember when you were a kid eating a sour piece of candy? Initially, the first bite would overtake you and induce that tell-tale, wide-eyed expression. Then the confection would settle in and lose some of its shock giving way to pleasantly mellow sweetness. The same sentiments can be attributed to this year’s pink trend. Cotton candy pinks and deep berry dyes will shock your senses in the most fantastic way. Worn casually in a sweater or jeans, this trend will instantly up your look’s fun factor.

Going Green

Green for spring…groundbreaking, right? But this year we’re not expecting the typical Kelly and Hunter greens. More natural hues like kale and greenery will be subtly making their marks. The mild tone of these shades gives you the latitude to easily transform a daytime outfit into one suitable for the night.

Flame On

You’re probably thinking “flame sounds like such a dramatic name for a color.” Trust us when we say the ones who assigned this name were onto something. Not just your average red, this color has golden orange undertones that immediately make you think of hot fire; and when worn in a loafer or pant, this color is definitely fire. There’s nothing restrained about this tint and the one who dares to don it is making a very clear declaration: this girl is on fire and she’s okay with it.

Khaki is the new Black

Previously reserved for casual Friday at the office, this understated tone has raised the bar. Seen in footwear and even full suits, Khaki has become the star of the show. What designers have discovered this year is the true versatility of a fabric and color once considered mundane. Khaki pairs well with anything – stripes, satin, floral, beading, and beyond. If you’re looking for a staple around which to build your spring wardrobe, this is it.

Into the Blue

Channel your inner seafarer as you begin building your spring wardrobe. Aquatic Caribbean blues – channeling enchanted springs and waterfalls – will transport you to blissful Islands abroad. From true blue to shades tinged with hints of green you won’t run out of options to choose from.
