Workout Clothes We’re Obsessed with This Season

Dressing for fall is simultaneously the most fun and the hardest endeavor – the struggle between staying warm, but not too hot is difficult, especially when it comes to getting dressed for a workout. We’ve put together some leggings, tees, sweaters, jackets, and shoes you can rock all autumn long while staying the perfect temperature.

Leggings

leggings

Say “goodbye” to your favorite workout shorts for now (I’m very happy about this because I prefer leggings in general) and pick yourself up some leggings. They’re great because they’re full coverage and come in all different materials so you can pick up a few pairs and wear them for various temperatures and activities. During a hot yoga session or a warmer fall run outside you can go with a light material legging, or on a cool day opt for a double-lined legging to stay warm. You can also use this season change as a reason to stock up on new leggings in fall colors, like army green, grey, burgundy, and nude!

SHOP: green leggings, ombre leggings, burgundy leggings, nude leggings, snake leggings

Lightweight Tees

lightweight tees t shirts

T-Shirts are essential when it comes to dressing for fall. They’re cool enough to wear on their own during a workout but they’re thin enough that they can be layered with a warm sweater for those cooler days on the way to the gym or the studio, or even on an outdoor run. I like to wear sassy graphic tees when I work out (like the “I’d Rather Be Sleeping” tee above) to really show off my horrible fun personality.  They’re also usually super inexpensive and can be found just about anywhere!

SHOP: green tee, mesh tee, nike tee, rather be tee, twist tee

Sweatshirts and Hoodies for Layering

 sweatshirts

Sweatshirts and hoodies are a layering item you don’t want to forget on a cool fall day. They can be worn on their own or over another piece. Cropped sweatshirts are especially cute during this transitional season because they look summer- and winter-appropriate simultaneously. You don’t need to buy a specific exercise brand of sweater either; any sweater will work for your workout as long as it’s warm.

SHOP: camo sweater, red sweater, blue tie sweater, brunette sweater, ripped sweater, adidas sweater

Outerwear

 outerwear jackets

On an especially cool day, you may need to consider layering up with a jacket or vest. Select one that’s lightweight and can easily be stored in your exercise bag as a bonus. Bomber jackets are on-trend right now, so it shouldn’t be hard to find the perfect jacket to add to your workout wardrobe.

SHOP: satin bomber, jersey bomber, green vest, ultra light pink jacket, blue bomber

Shoes

shoes sneakers

The little perforations that make our feet stay cool in the summer are the features that will make us freeze to death in the fall and winter, because if your feet are cold, so is your entire body, so you might want to grab a new pair of sneakers. And hey, I’ll take any excuse to go out and buy a new pair of shoes. While browsing the Nike website, I discovered that they have a filter you can select to look at shoes that are built for the cold weather, with 35 different pairs to choose from, so go nuts!

SHOP: black shoes, red shoes, nude shoes, orange shoes, blue shoes

Things You Never Knew About People with Red Hair

Kermit the Frog should step off the lily pad of self pity and stop croaking that, “It’s not easy being green.” Redheads dwell in a gene pool that’s far less hospitable. Sperm banks worldwide politely decline “donations” from ginger gents because the demand for their signature trait is so low. Scientists persistently produce data showing how redheads run a higher risk of developing skin cancers. The gossip media feasts on celebrities’ decisions to dye their hair red; denouncing the choice as a plea for attention. Meanwhile, the advertising industry floods our attention with an exaggerated stream of models with red hair because their rare existence – in reality – is so titillating to the eye. Some historians trace redheads’ scorn and allure back as far as the 11th Century, when Nordic Vikings pillaged the British isles. They may be dwindling in numbers, but redheads command our attention as much as the beasts of “Jurassic Park.”

RED HERRINGS

The advertising industry blatantly fosters the false impression that redheads are far more prevalent in society than they actually are. While researchers generally concur that only two percent of Americans are redheads, an extensive study conducted by Upstream Analysis showed that one-third of the 1,700 commercials aired during prime time in a five-day stretch on ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox featured red-headed characters, and more than half of those ads cast redheads as the main character. The study concluded that advertisers rely on the fact that consumers tend to act on impulse when exposed to visual novelties.

CODE RED

Researchers agree that red hair is a mutation that comes from the rare MC1R pigmentation gene. And the journal LiveScience has identified five distinct health risks that those who carry the gene have in common.

1) People with red hair have twice the likelihood of developing Parkinson’s disease than their black-haired counterparts.

2) Carriers of the MC1R gene may suffer a higher rate of tooth decay and gum disease due to their lower tolerance for pain and requirements for larger doses of anesthesia at the dentist’s office.

3) Endometriosis – the painful growth of tissue outside of the uterus – afflicts women with red hair at rates of up to 30 percent more than it does other women between ages 25 to 42.

4) Lab experiments on mice bred with the MC1R gene showed a higher propensity for skin cancer.

5) One out of every 20,000 carriers of the MC1R gene is at risk of developing Congenital Melanocytic Naevi skin discolorations.

Other research indicates that as children, redheads suffer from diminished self-esteem and high rates of self-imposed isolation from their peers.

RED SCARE

While the general consensus among researchers is that redheads represent two percent of the worldwide population, there is rampant speculation over whether their genetic mutation could be wiped off the face of the earth entirely over time. Some analysts, like those at the gene-tracing firm ScotlandsDNA, say climate change could be blamed if redheads go the way of the dinosaur. Their reasoning: Global warming could drastically reduce the number of cloudy days, leaving carriers of the MC1R gene defenseless against ultra-violet sun rays over time.

RED WHINE

Ever since one of the world’s pre-eminent sperm banks Cryos International stopped accepting donations from male carriers of the MC1R gene five years ago, there’s been an outcry from redheads who resent being pushed to the fringe of desirability. Sperm suppliers reason that – with the exception of Ireland, where 10 percent of the population has red hair – the existing supply worldwide already far exceeds demand. Even in Scandinavian countries where blonde hair and blue/green eyes are most prevalent, sperm recipients show a distinct preference for genes associated with dark hair and brown eyes.

Fashion Meets Compassion: Your Guide to Cruelty-Free Clothes

If you’re like me, you absolutely adore animals. (In fact, you may even prefer them to most humans.) But the fashion industry isn’t always kind to our furry friends. Before you stock your closet with the latest cold-weather styles, you may want to take a closer look at what you’re buying. We’re making it easy to make compassionate choices with a beginner’s guide to animal-friendly style. Check out these cruelty-free clothes that are both fashionable and kind.

Go Faux: Cruelty-Free Clothes for the Season

Leather Alternatives

Each and every year, millions of cows, pigs, sheep, and goats are slaughtered by the leather industry for their skin. And while leather may look supple and expensive, vegan leather offers a more compassionate alternative with the same good looks. Opt for shoes, handbags, and accessories made with synthetic materials instead.

Untitled #245

Sole Society Harley Front Pocket Vegan Leather Tote, $69.95
H&M Gloves, $17.99
Sole Society Vegan Bucket Bag, $32.48

Fur Alternatives

More and more retailers are banning real fur altogether, and for good reason. Animals are skinned alive for their pelts, and who could ever feel pretty wearing the product of such a barbaric practice? Fortunately, faux fur clothing is everywhere — and it’s way more affordable than real skins.

Vegan Clothes

Boston Proper Faux Fur Colorblock Jacket, $198
J.Crew Faux-Fur Leopard Vest, 128
Boston Proper Camo Faux-Fur Chubby Jacket, $198

Suede Alternatives

Why spend a fortune on weather-sensitive suede when you can rock a low-maintenance imitator for a fraction of the cost? Look for fall styles made with faux suede, microfiber, or even velvet for a luxe feel that’s better than the real thing.

Animal Friendly Fashion

H&M Block-Heeled Ankle Boots, $49.99
Boston Proper Velvet Moto Jacket, $228
H&M Imitation Suede Skirt, $24.99

Down Alternatives

Down-filled jackets don’t give geese and ducks any warm and fuzzy feelings. These designs are made by plucking the closest layer of feathers to a bird’s skin, which causes the bird excruciating pain. Oddly enough, down is less effective than its synthetic counterparts — and it’s less durable in extreme conditions. Look for padded jackets and vests that are made with synthetic down or polyester fill.

Down Alternatives

H&M Padded Jacket, $39.99
H&M Parka with Inner Jacket, $99
H&M Padded Jacket, $49.99

Wool Alternatives

A lot of people mistakenly assume that wool is derived from giving sheep routine haircuts, but that’s so far removed from the truth. Sheep need their wool coats to stay warm in frigid temperatures, and shearers are paid by volume instead of being paid hourly. As a result, sheep are routinely injured and mauled, and many die as a direct result of their grueling environments. Avoid cashmere, mohair, angora, shearling, and pashmina, and cuddle up to synthetic options like polyester fleece, cotton flannel, and acrylic knits.

Cruelty-Free Clothes

H&M Scarf, $17.99
Sole Society Fuzzy Cropped Cardigan, $74.95
Sole Society Mixed Knit Beanie w/ Faux Fur Pom, $26.95

Silk Alternatives

Parisian-inspired neck scarves are so chic — as long as they’re not cruel. Silk may seem like an innocent fabric compared to the others listed above, but its coveted fibers are obtained by boiling, steaming, or gassing live silkworms in their cocoons. Reach for synthetic alternatives like nylon, polyester, rayon, satin, and viscose chiffon instead.

cruelty-free clothes

H&M Satin Blouse, $24.99
Chan Luu Blue Mix Flower Skinny Scarf, $35.00
H&M Short Skirt, $29.99

Ways to Transform your Home into a B&B

Staying in another’s home is never quite as comfortable as staying in your very own. To give your company a true luxury getaway, add these unique touches to their overnight stay. Here are five ways to transform your home into a B&B for house guests.

1. Create A Sweet Suite

iStock_000066206933_Medium

The Not-So-Basic Basics

Be the best host you can be by going above and beyond fresh sheets and towels. Stock the guest suite with a radio alarm clock, a luggage rack, an iron, a night-light, plenty of available velvet hangers in the closet and an external battery pack to fuel a full day of sightseeing for those who have left their chargers behind. These are the not-so-basic basics when starting a bed and breakfast in your home.

Extra Luxuries

Make your guests feel they’ve entered a sweet suite by adding fresh flowers around the room, a few popular books, local magazines, the city’s latest Zagat guide, a side chair for reading, a soft throw for afternoon naps and a fragrant candle and matches. For the ultimate extra luxury, hang fluffy white robes (monogram optional) near the bathroom for instant guest relaxation while in the bedroom and bath.

The Spa

Create a home B&B spa with endless cotton balls and swabs in pretty containers, white slippers to match those fluffy robes and a fresh set of high-end hand soap, hand cream and body lotion. Set an inviting bath scene by adding a bath tray complete with book stand and wine holder, a nearby basket with fresh washcloths, bath salts and aromatherapy bubble bath. Be sure to stash extra toilet paper and a hair dryer in the vanity. For a final spa touch, provide a basket of travel-sized toiletries guests may have forgotten and don’t necessarily want to ask for: shampoo, conditioner, floss, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, razor, shaving cream, face wash, sunscreen and makeup remover. Now, the hard part: walk out of the room and leave it all for your guests.

2. Partially Plan Their Day

iStock_000080333087_Small

2-Hour Breakfast

Set a two-hour window for breakfast in the morning, so houseguests can rise and dine (somewhat) at their leisure. Satisfy all cravings by including morning menu options that are both carb-loaded, like homemade pancakes or your town’s best baked goods, and light and healthy including fresh berries, yogurt, granola and egg white scramble.

Happy Hour

Setting a daily happy hour time puts a smile on everyone’s face and motivates guests to rest and refresh before raising a glass to the evening ahead. Offer an hour of cocktails and a spread of various appetizers both hot and cold.

An Evening Out

Make one restaurant reservation for your guests at a popular spot in town. If they are party people, also suggest a nearby lounge for after dinner. If they aren’t interested in the cuisine or getting out and about, offer to cancel it. This way, it’s one less thing they have to figure out. Homebodies? Let them choose between relaxing for a movie night with popcorn on the couch or get fancy and host a wine tasting before dinner at your home B&B.

3. Hometown Hit List

SONY DSC

Pretend you’re a tourist in your own town and research the best things for your guests to do in the area during their stay. Be sure to gear activities to the exact crowd, customizing it based on whether you’re hosting a young couple, grandparents or a rowdy family of five. Include the best boutiques, fine dining, burger joints, off-the-beaten path neighborhoods, most photogenic places, standout museums and parks and music venues. Now, once you’ve done the legwork, leave it to them to choose the itinerary that will delight them most.

4. Play Mixologist

iStock_000062903546_Small

Stocked Options

Even if you only ever saw your old college friend guzzling no-name beer, people change and so do their drink preferences. Make sure your bar is fully stocked with the major liquors, mixers and an assortment of wines including rosé and sparkling, so everyone is cocktail content.

Shake It Up

Surprise guests by pouring them a signature hand-crafted seasonal cocktail with uniquely shaped ice cubes, fresh fruit garnish and a chic cocktail napkin underneath.

5. Midnight Snack Box

shutterstock_172911812

The Munchies

In case the midnight munchies attack, leave a snack box in the guest room with chocolate, granola bars, dried fruit, mints and gum, so overnighters won’t have to sneak out to the kitchen for a snack late at night.

Satisfy Their Thirst

A full mini bar might be a bit ridiculous in your guest room. However, an assortment of beverages at the ready is not. Stuff the snack box with bottled water, soda and seltzer, too. Then, just add clean glasses and a fresh cup of ice each evening to satisfy their thirst.

Next Day Necessities

In case your sleepover pals get a little too rowdy at night, throw some ibuprofen, Gatorade and a few packages of Emergen-C vitamin supplement packs in the snack box, too.

Whether you test out all of these home-to-B&B transformation tips or just a few for upcoming houseguests, it’s almost certain these luxuries will result in some happy campers.

WARNING: Offer these luxury upgrades only to your favorite houseguests. After feeling this spoiled, they may never leave. Also, you may have so much fun hosting that you’ll consider starting a bed and breakfast outside of your home.

Ask a Pro: The Five Biggest Makeup Mistakes to Avoid

I think as far as beauty mistakes women make, in general, it boils down to the time they take to buy it and apply it. Specifically, there are a few mistakes I see women make on a daily basis, some with pretty simple fixes. But, everyone is in such a hurry and they miss those couple extra moments to sit down with an artist and learn from them.

With makeup being a beauty standard, women are now starting to take more notice and advice from the professionals, although that advice and the time of an experienced artist costs money. These are some of the biggest makeup mistakes I see almost every day, and I’m giving them to you free of charge 🙂

1. Foundation not matching your skin tone

Regardless of if you want to look tanner, you do not like your skin tone or you are trying to hide dark circles or dark spots, everyone should get a color that is correct for them. Spending some time asking questions and trying products on in a makeup-based store will save you many headaches and over time will save you money. Makeup artists are trained in those products and deal with different skin types and tones day in and day out.

The best way to find a great foundation is to pay attention to what your skin does during the day. Is your skin oily, dry or a combo of both? Then the formula comes into play – do you prefer powder, cream or liquid?

The best way to color match is not on your hand or chin but along your forehead and down into the neck. Pay attention to the neck tone – is it warmer and more pink, or cooler and more yellow? Does it pull a reddish or green tone? All of these questions and concerns need to be addressed, and every person wearing makeup has different needs. You will only know the answers to them all if you go to an artist or consult a makeup line that has trained professionals in their arsenal. If you don’t happen to gel with that artist, nicely ask for another artist to help you. We only get what we want if we are polite and inquisitive and that goes for makeup shopping as well.

2. Dry skin

No foundation or combo of products will look good if your skin is dry or not taken care of properly! So invest in good cleaning products, a good moisturizer, eye cream and exfoliator, either in the form of a buff pad, Clarisonic or volcanic ash exfoliator. They do not have to be expensive but they should have benefitting ingredients in them.

woman face water

I am a huge fan of simple solutions like drinking more water and putting coconut oil on my face, hair and body every day. I even take my makeup off with coconut oil. Trader Joe’s coconut oil (for only about $5) is the best investment one can make; I keep one in the bathroom and one in the kitchen.

3. Not cleaning your brushes

You cannot have pretty, long-lasting makeup with good skin if you do not take care of your tools, especially any brush or sponge that touches a cream or liquid. I suggest using MAC’S brush cleaner with a paper towel daily; but along with that, I highly recommend cleaning them weekly with warm to hot water and a gentle liquid hand soap or baby shampoo. Lay them flat and let them air dry overnight. Pro sponges and beauty blenders need to be cleaned after every use. That extra time here is not only recommended but mandatory for your overall skin health and makeup looks. Makeup Artists are only as good as their brushes are clean.

4. Too much bronzer and too much blush

Now don’t get me wrong, I love love love blush and bronzer but a little goes a long way. Bronzer should go on after your powder and use it to shade the face and add warmth. Also blend it into your neck; the chin shields the sun from your neck so go ahead and blend a little bronzer there.

woman bronzer blush

Bronzer should be a nice golden yellow tone for lighter complexions and a little reddish for darker complexions. Use a big fluffy brush to apply a small amount first.

Blush should be applied in a dabbing or circular motion, not a sweeping back to the temple motion. Try using a small fluffy brush with an angle. Blush color depends on your skin tone, lip or eye colors being used. You can use many different shades, shiny or matte or you can mix a couple of different shades. Start with the blush color in between the apples of the cheek and the hollows of your cheek.

5. Black eyeliner in just the water line

I am a huge fan of black eyeliner – pencil, cream, gel, liquid, etc. If it’s black, I want it! It just looks very harsh if it’s not blended with an eyeshadow or softened with a brown bronzy eyeliner or another color.

woman applying black eyeliner waterline

My favorite way to wear a black pencil eyeliner in the water line is by setting it with a black eyeshadow and blending the eyeliner into the lash line and just below. I blend out the black shadow with another color as well, so the look is more of a faded smokey rather than a harsh line.

11 DIY Halloween Costumes That are Wicked Easy to Make

October is finally upon us, ghoulfriends — so let’s eat, drink, and be scary. If you’re strapped for cash and short on time, have no fear. These DIY Halloween costumes are all thrills (and no frills).

11 DIY Halloween Costumes Any Basic Witch Can Make

1. Modern Medusa

It’s totally safe to gaze upon this version of Medusa, which is great considering this costume is sure to turn heads.

diy halloween costume

What You’ll Need:

  • A white dress or white fabric for a makeshift toga
  • Rubber toy snakes
  • Bobby pins
  • Gladiator sandals and gold jewelry (optional)

Make several messy braids throughout your hair, and then pin them to your head to create a plaited updo. Next, weave the rubber snakes through the braids, securing them to your head with bobby pins.

Slip into a flowy Grecian-inspired dress and complete the look with gladiator sandals (although if your dress is long enough, the footwear won’t even show). Add some optional snake jewelry and cuff bracelets for a glamorous finishing touch.

2. Majestic Mermaid

Speaking of mythical creatures, who doesn’t want to be a mermaid? Sure, you can spend $100+ on a sparkling Ariel costume — or you could dive right in and make one yourself.

easy mermaid costume

What You’ll Need:

  • Green sequin fabric
  • Safety pins
  • A corset (a plain t-shirt or tank top can also work)
  • Decorative seashells
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks

The most time-consuming part of this costume is hot-gluing seashells all over your top of choice. This is definitely the prettiest way to create the look, but you can also take the lazy girl’s route and iron, stencil, or paint seashells onto a plain white t-shirt instead.

For the skirt, buy some green glitter fabric at your local department store. Wrap it around your waist, secure it with safety pins (because who has time to sew?), and let the excess fabric gather in the back to mimic a fishtail.

3. Bandits on the Run

A black-and-white striped shirt is a wardrobe essential, and it can come in especially handy when you’re looking for a costume that’s a real steal.

bandits

What You’ll Need:

  • A black-and-white striped shirt
  • Black gloves
  • A black mask
  • A canvas bag
  • A black marker

Paint or stencil a dollar sign onto a canvas bag, add some cold-weather accessories with your striped shirt, and cover up your face with a black eye mask.

Just don’t walk into any business establishments.

4. Sweet Scarecrow

If you’re obsessed with fall fashion like we are, it only makes sense to include your favorite seasonal styles in your Halloween get-up.

What You’ll Need:

  • A plaid shirt
  • A floppy hat
  • Artificial flowers
  • Black eyeliner
  • Orange eyeshadow

Wear a plaid shirt with leggings or a pair of jeans, and then top things off with a floppy hat. Use eyeliner and orange eyeshadow to create a face full of stitches, and carry around a few artificial sunflowers if you’re so inclined.

5. Crazy-Comfy Cat Lady

Skimpy Halloween costumes have their place, but I’ll take a comfortable alternative any day. That’s why this DIY is so perfect. You’re literally wearing a robe and fuzzy slippers, plus you can curl your hair for work the next day (#multitasking).

What You’ll Need:

  • A robe
  • Stuffed cats
  • Safety pins
  • Hair curlers
  • Eyeglasses (optional)

Pin or stitch a bunch of stuffed cats onto an old robe, wrap your hair up with big foam rollers, and show off your cat-itude.

6. Little Bo Sheep

Speaking of cozy costumes, this sheep outfit is sure to keep you warm on the chilliest October evening.

easy sheep costume

What You’ll Need:

  • An old dress
  • Cotton balls
  • Hot glue gun
  • Hot glue sticks
  • A beanie cap
  • Pink felt
  • Black felt
  • Scissors
  • A needle and thread

You’ll need an old dress that you no longer wear anymore and a lot of patience, because you’re going to hot-glue cotton balls all over it. Seriously, all over. Front and back. Top to bottom.

For the hat, cut some black and pink felt sheets into ears. Sew the ends together to give them a pinched, more rounded appearance. Next, sew the ears onto a white beanie cap. Cover the cap with more cotton balls, and you’re ready for some boos and baas.

8. Magic Act

Old wire hanger? Check. White clothes? Check. White taffeta fabric? Okay, you may have to buy that. But that’s literally all you need to create this adorable half of a couple’s costume.

diy halloween costume

What You’ll Need:

  • A wire hanger (or 18 gauge wire)
  • White or off-white clothes
  • White taffeta fabric
  • A needle and thread
  • A man with a top hat

Cut two panels of taffeta fabric into long ear shapes, sew the cutouts together, and leave a small opening where you can insert the wire.

What You’ll Need:

  • A plain t-shirt
  • Alphabet stencils
  • A fabric marker or fabric paint
  • Kids (or pets!)

Fellow thrifters, this is for you. If you’re obsessed with The Princess Bride (and honestly, who isn’t?) then you’ll be pleased to know that dressing like lovelorn Princess Buttercup only requires a few items. Almost inconceivable.

easy halloween costume

What You’ll Need:

  • A long, red dress
  • A gold belt
  • A long blonde wig
  • Your Westley

Buy or borrow a long red dress, add a gold belt at the waist, and dress your man like a swashbuckling ninja, AKA the Dread Pirate Roberts. (Just remind him that the costume includes a sword to get him to do “as you wish.”)

What to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Here comes the bride… and here comes the indecision about what on Earth you should wear to her ceremony. There’s something so beautiful about saying “I do” surrounded by fallen leaves and rustic burlap decor; but figuring out what to wear to a fall wedding can prove a little tricky. If you’ve RSVP’d to an autumn affair, then these styling ideas are sure to inspire.

8 Classic Outfit Formulas for Fall Wedding Guests

1. Subtle Metallics

When it comes to weddings, there are only a couple of outfit rules for guests: don’t wear white, and don’t try to upstage the bride. Solid metallics are an excellent way of dressing up without looking too flashy. Avoid wearing all-over sequins or embellishments, and stick to simple silver, gold, rose gold, or bronze designs instead.

Try:

2. Something Blue

Blue is a universally flattering shade, and it’s a great way to add a color pop to your favorite LBD. Use navy, cobalt, and sapphire as accent colors to strategically freshen up a tried-and-true wardrobe staple.

4. Lovely Layers

With fall weddings, it’s a bit challenging to predict what kind of weather conditions you’ll encounter on the big day. That’s why it’s smart to create an ensemble that includes a few luxe layers. Comfy longline cardigans are perfect additions to silky gowns, while velvety kimonos give chiffon party dresses a little bohemian flair. Attending a fancy ceremony on a chilly evening? Top off your look with a satin jacket or a faux fur coat.

We’re Obsessed with These Fall Jackets

The Great Pumpkin hatched Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Latte. Squirrels are scurrying around our yards, burying and reburying their acorns. Pumpkins, some painted, some carved, are popping up on porches and in big box stores. And the leaves are changing from green to gold, red, and orange. This can only mean one thing: it’s officially jacket season.

The changing of the seasons, though, doesn’t mean that you have to overhaul your closet. Yes, you can keep out your sundresses, short-shorts, and white jeans. Our rule of thumb: when in doubt, don’t toss it out—add a layer.

Jackets are year-round layer slayers. So, we scoured the catwalk for six, trendy coats that you can throw on, zip up, or effortlessly drape over your shoulders like the street stylin’ pro you truly are.

Floral Print Maxi Kimono Jacket

While attending the opening of Hamilton, Jessica Alba showed off her blossoming baby bump in a simple black dress and Topshop’s Floral Print Maxi Kimono Jacket. Then Catt Sadler, an anchor for E! News and the Daily Pop, and Füsun Lindner, a German beauty blogger and editor, slipped on the sunny statement jacket with a vintage floral print—one that you might find in your aunt’s living room—resulting in an online fashion grab.  “The jacket is sold out online,” a Topshop representative told Beyond Words,  “but it’s still available in select U.S stores.” If you can find it, pair it with a yellow vintage hat, silver glitterati boots, or a wide black belt, and you’ll tick off two of this season’s top fashion trends.

Skater Trench Coat

Asos’s Skater Trench Coat is perfect for the in-between seasons and the warmer-than-average Southern winters, where a light layer is all that you need.  A classic and a fall wardrobe staple, this millennial pink coat has a harder-to-pull-off double breast, a waist-cinching belt, and button detailing—three design elements that dominated the 2017’s fall runways.  And, of course, if you’re going pink in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, this outerwear will give your wardrobe and your spirit  a little lift.

Cut from a lightweight material, Nordstrom’s Satin Duster Jacket provides more than enough warm and toasty coverage by reaching your mid-calf. Laid-back yet oh-so-luxe, this light grey duster has a sleek notched collar, choose-your-own-adventure slits, and long, cuffed sleeves. Layer it on top of fishnet tights and a lace slip dress for a go-to date night outfit — even with the extra element of unpredictable fall weather.

Red Wool Midi Coat with Hood

Powerful. Evocative. Dynamic. Say hello to Grenadine, the fiery red color that’s making a comeback this fall, according to the Pantone Fashion Color Report. If you’re looking to make a statement that goes beyond the color wheel, buying from mom and pop shops,  then you’ll want to snap up Xiaolizi Handmade’s Hooded Red Wool Midi Coat. With an empire waist, wide-flowing skirt, extra long sleeves, and a roomy hood, this wool coat will turn you into a real-life fairytale:  the Grimm brothers’ Little Red Riding Hood. *Photo is featured image at top of article.

1969 Denim Jacket

Have you ever wished that you could hop into a Delorean and travel back in time to the decade that captures your personal style? Well, now you can — sort of.  Don and Doris Fisher opened the Gap in 1969. Nearly half a century later, the retail giant has revived one of its first Denim Jackets. This medium blue wash outerwear has subtle faded accents, whiskering, and angled welt pockets. However, if you’re really looking to make a statement (and play with the time continuum a little by meshing the past and the present ) follow in the footsteps of fashion designer Adam Lippes and his models, who carried signs that read  “My Body, My Choice”, “Women’s Rights Are Human Rights”, and “Fashion Stands With Planned Parenthood” during New York’s fashion week.  Iron on a protest patch or pair your jean jacket with a protest t-shirt.

Vero Moda Velvet Bomber

Bomber jackets are basically letterman jackets that have taken a daring fashion turn. With tweed and leather insets, lace-like embellishments, and high-shine, they can be paired with almost anything from mid-length skirts to Victorian collars to steel-toed boots, making them a smart piece to invest in. Vero Moda’s Velvet Bomber features a baseball collar, garnet-toned velvet, and vintage-embroidered flowers that won’t wilt your fashion sense.

Our Favorite Lightweight Sweaters to Transition into Fall

It’s almost that time of year again, when you’re freezing in the morning and sweating by the afternoon. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably craving the cool weather by now and the chance to wear your favorite cozy sweaters.

The key to finding the perfect lightweight sweater is all in the material. Cotton, linen, and silk are all materials that will keep you perfectly comfortable and not too hot or  cold. Plus, cotton is one of the most common sweater materials, so you’ll find lots of lightweight sweater options at all of your favourite stores. Simpler still, we’ve rounded up our favorite lightweight sweaters and sweatshirts to help you transition from summer to fall weather without sweating your life away!

The Cropped Sweater

cropped sweater

A cropped sweater is perfect for summer-fall transition weather because it keeps you warm without covering your body in too much material. Showing a little bit of skin keeps the look summer-y while the sweater silhouette keeps you looking and feeling appropriate for the upcoming season. I’d pair a cropped sweater with leggings, my favourite booties, a wicked pair of sunglasses, and a chic backpack! The sweater above is from the Yeezy Season 1 Collection and can be paired with just about anything, making it the perfect addition to your wardrobe!

The Cardigan Sweater

There’s nothing like a good cardigan, in the Summer and in the Fall. Cardigans are especially perfect for transitional weather because you can wear something light underneath while still having the option for warmth. Dressing between seasons is all about layering, and a cardigan is the perfect piece for it. I love pairing cardigans with ripped jeans, aviator sunglasses, tan booties, and a fun bag (I’m obsessed with fringe)! This beautiful white cardigan is from Free People and is made out of 100% cotton. This piece can be dressed up or down, and can be worn both day and night.

The Sweater Dress

A sweater dress is probably my all-time favourite thing to wear. Sweater dresses are the ideal piece to wear when you’re unsure what the weather will be like throughout the day; on a cool morning a sweater dress can keep you warm, and on a balmy afternoon your bare legs can catch some rays! Nine times out of ten I pair my sweater dresses with thigh high or knee high boots – those are especially great for cooler weather because you can still show a little skin on your legs without freezing. I’d also pair this look with oversized sunglasses and a fun bag: how good is this fluffy bag from MANGO? I think I have to order it right now. (This sweater dress can be found at Shein.)

The Night Out Sweater

It can be hard to find a sweater for a night on the town that doesn’t look too casual. But this sweater from TopShop is the perfect thing to wear for a night out because the lace detailing up the front of the sweater makes your entire look sexy and more than appropriate for a nighttime event. The lace up detail also helps to cinch in the waist to accentuate your curves! This sweater would be perfectly paired with leather jeans, a simple clutch, pointy-toed pumps, and a red lip.

Are Magnetic Lashes Worth the Hype?

As a beauty blogger, I’m always on the lookout for the next big thing. Korean bubble masks? Sure! Glitter hair? Let’s do this. That being said, I’ll go ahead and admit that even though I love fawning over the latest and greatest eyeshadow palettes and lip stains, I’m pretty stuck in my ways when it comes to the makeup and skincare products I use on a daily basis. But several months ago, I spotted a trend that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on: magnetic lashes.

You’re probably thinking one of two things: “Magnets… on your lashes?” or “Oh yeah, I’ve seen those!” Or maybe you’re still thinking about those bubble masks (because seriously, how cool are those things, right?).

With every passing year, I find myself getting lazier and lazier with my beauty routine. And if magnetic lashes can eliminate my need for daily mascara and (even better) special-occasion false lashes, then sign me up. I decided to take a chance on the latest craze to see if it’s really worth all the hype.

Magnetic Lashes: Friend or Faux?

I ordered my magnetic lashes from One Two Lash, the founders of this patent-pending trend and the company that originally caught my “eye,” wink wink. I looked at some of the brand’s online competitors, but I figured One Two Lash’s higher price tag might imply better quality.

The set included two pairs of magnetic lashes per eye, and it cost a grand total of $69. I ordered the original magnetic lashes, but these designs are also available in accent corners as well as a bold version that’s darker, thicker, and specifically designed for evening wear.

As you can see from the picture above, these lashes are divided into upper and lower lash strips. (The top and bottom lash strips attach to one another, and the bottom strips feature a red dot on their magnets to help you differentiate between the two.) I’d watched several videos on how to apply these lashes – and I’d also read several negative reviews from other bloggers who struggled with the process – so I headed straight to the nearest mirror as soon as they arrived to try them out for myself.

The Application Process

If you’re anything like me, the idea of magnetic lashes is a bit confusing. How do these things even work, anyways? I quickly discovered that the answer to this question is not very easily.

You position the upper strip on top of your upper lashes, and then you apply the lower strip to the underside of your upper lashes. The two sections clamp together, with your upper lashes essentially sandwiched in-between them.

You’ll want to apply and remove your magnetic lashes using your fingers (metal tweezers are a no-go because metal and magnets are a little too compatible). Speaking of the removal process, it’s super easy — perhaps the easiest part, in fact. Just slide the magnets apart between your fingers using a horizontal motion (which is way less painful than tugging glued strips of false lashes off your eyes, IMHO).

The Results

magnetic lashes results

Here’s the thing: I really, really wanted to love these… but I didn’t.

From a distance, they look natural. The color is believable, and the length is perfect for everyday wear. They’re made of synthetic materials, so they’re a great cruelty-free option, as well. And the fact that they can be re-used with proper care definitely appeals to my thrifty side.

The problem, though, is that they really aren’t perfected yet – and no, I’m not even that hard to please. There are three primary issues that really stood out to me.

These lashes may look fine from afar, but they don’t really pass the up-close-and-personal test. The strips aren’t curved whatsoever, so they sit on your upper lashes in a straight, hard line.

I like a good challenge, so I wouldn’t even mind disguising this with the help of some eyeliner magic. But these strips only sit on the ends of your lashes, so half of your lash line is completely bare.

Then, there’s the application struggle – and trust me, the struggle is real. You’ll have to play around with these to get them situated on your lashes in a somewhat normal way, and you’ll have to do this while making both eyes look even. I have a lot of patience, but this was a little too frustrating even for me. I can’t imagine trying to include this in my morning routine. (There’s not enough coffee in the world.)

I’d even be willing to overlook all of these issues, but these magnetic lashes actually fell off my eyes twice in a six-hour period (at which time, I promptly put them right back in the box to avoid losing them altogether).

The first time, I’d rubbed my eye without thinking. Fine, my bad. The second time, though, the lash strip literally dropped off my eye out of nowhere. The good news? The magnets do stay together, so you’ll find both strips. The bad news? That’s if you find them at all.

I adore the idea of this trend, and I think that the concept is refreshingly innovative. Unfortunately, I just don’t think these lashes have what it takes to make people say, “Maybe she’s born with it. Maybe it’s magnetics.” With a few tweaks, however, this could very well become a revolutionary beauty product that I’d definitely be willing to try again.

Only time will tell.

The Good:

  • No glue, and no mascara smudges
  • Reusable with proper care
  • Made with synthetic materials
  • Cost-effective in the long-term
  • No need for eye-makeup remover

The Bad:

  • Very challenging to apply
  • Unnatural appearance on the lash line
  • Not secure
  • Higher upfront cost
