In the age of online shopping, it can be difficult to determine whether or not something will fit you, or even suit your style. It can be even harder when you’re trying to pick up sunglasses for festival season – after all, the pressure to find the perfect pair is at an all-time high! That’s why we’ve put together a guide to help you find the perfect pair of sunglasses for you without even trying them on.

To find the perfect pair of sunnies you need to first determine your face shape. There are 4 main categories; round, heart, oval, and square.

Round faces generally have soft facial features, little to no definitive angles, an equally proportioned jaw to forehead ratio, and wide-set cheekbones. For reference, celebrities like Emma Stone, Mila Kunis, Cameron Diaz, and Jennifer Lawrence have round faces.

Heart-shaped faces consist of prominent cheekbones, a wide-set forehead, and a narrow chin. Celebs Reese Witherspoon, Ashley Olsen, Scarlett Johansson, and Ashanti all have heart shaped faces.

Oval faces are very proportionate and symmetrical, with a slightly rounded forehead and jawline. Kate Middleton, Tina Fey, Jessica Alba, and Oprah are examples of celebrities with oval-shaped faces.

Squareshaped faces have very sharp facial features and bone structure, a prominent jawline, and the width of the jaw is similar to the width of the forehead (forming a square shape). Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Lucy Liu, and Olivia Wilde all have square-shaped faces.

Now that you’ve fit yourself into a category, you can begin to discover and shop the sunnies that will accentuate and compliment your gorgeous features, and avoid the ones that won’t.

If you have a round facial structure, you should consider opting for a pair of sunglasses that will add some definition to your facial features. Avoid round frames, as they can make your face look even rounder than it is naturally. Rectangular and square frames are the best options.

Because heart shaped faces tend to be a little top heavy due to a wider forehead and narrower chin, those with this face shape should choose sunglasses that draw attention to the bottom of your face to help balance things out. Frames that are also top-heavy should be avoided. Pick up a pair of aviators, or cat eye sunglasses with an equally proportioned frame.

Oval shaped faces tend to be very proportionate and symmetrical, meaning that you can basically throw on any pair of sunnies and have them look perfect on you (SO JEALOUS). The options are pretty much endless when it comes to sunglasses that will highlight your features, which means that you can experiment and try out edgy and fashion-forward sunglasses. The world is your oyster – try out oversized, retro, cat-eye, aviators, and any other style that catches your eye, literally.

Square-shaped faces look best in rounded sunglasses. Because square faces have such strong facial features, rounded frames work to help balance out and soften those features. Aviators, rounded frames, and oversized sunnies look amazing on this face shape. Another tip is to make sure that your sunglasses are wider-set than your cheekbones are.

If you want to take the search for the perfect sunnies to the next level, you can even experiment with colour theory. By determining whether your skin tone is cool or warm, you can also determine the colour of sunglass frame and lense that’s going to further accentuate your features. To determine your skin tone, examine the veins on your forearms; if they’re blue you have cool-toned skin, and if they’re green you have warm toned skin.

Next, think about what happens to your skin during exposure to the sun; if you burn easily, you have cool-toned skin, and if you tan easily, you have warm toned skin. Lastly, what’s your eye colour? Blue, green, and grey eyes translate to cool-toned skin, and brown, black, and hazel eyes translate to warm-toned skin.

Now that you’ve determined your skin tone, you can choose frames and lens colours that will suit you best. For cool-toned skin choose silver, blue, purple, pink, or green. For warm toned skin, choose gold, yellow, orange, red, brown, beige.

If you still don’t know what to choose, you can never go wrong with a great pair of black aviators!
