Must-Have Beach Bags for the Summer

Summer is here and if you’re not spending every day at the beach, you’re doing it wrong. Check out our roundup of beach bags below, pack your favorite with all of your summer essentials, find the nearest body of water (even if that body of water is a kiddie pool in your backyard), and live your best life.

the silicone beach bag

One of the best things about silicone beach bags is they’re completely waterproof. What’s even better than that is silicone beach bags actually repel sand. Silicone as a material is super durable and is wipe-able and washable so you’re not tracking sand all over your car. These silicone beach bags are super affordable and come in several different neon colors.

the sneaky beach bag

Perhaps my favorite beach bag of the bunch, PortoVino has a collection of bags you can take from the office (sans alcohol) to the beach (obviously with alcohol). With the PortoVino bag, you can conceal and carry two bottles of wine (or 1.5 L of margaritas, if you’re like me) in its insulated pocket. The bag even comes with a pouring spout so you can pour your alcoholic beverage straight from it. If you’re not into breaking the law and drinking in public, the bag is fully usable to carry other boring things, like your sunscreen and your beach towel!

the clear beach bag

A post shared by 360designbox (@360_design_box) on

There’s nothing worse than digging through your beach bag to find your fav pair of sunnies when there’s sand all over your hands, the sun is in your eyes, and they’re buried somewhere in the bottom — that’s where clear beach bags come in handy. These clear beach bags come with a full zipper closure so all of your belongings are safe and sound. This bag works especially well if you’re attending a summer event that requires a bag check as security can see right inside it.

the cooler beach bag

A post shared by Satchel. (@satchelsavannah) on

If you plan on having a complete beach day, you’re going to need some refreshments, and that’s where a beach bag with a cooler compartment comes in handy (unless you like paying $14 for beach french fries). With a cooler compartment, you can pack an entire picnic with food and drink without anything overheating or going bad in the sun. We found this cooler bag, and the amazing thing about it is the cooler compartment is completely separated so you don’t have to worry about your sunscreen mixing with your sandwich.

the super cute beach bag

If you’re more concerned with fashion over function (guilty), you might want to pick up a beach bag that can easily be transitioned from the beach to the bar on those long summer days that quickly and unexpectedly turn into long summer nights. My favorite type of beach bag to transition from day to night is a straw beach bag with embroidery, pom poms, or tassels. These bags look perfect and can actually help to dress up a simple beach-y outfit.

9 Summer Hair Products Every Beach Babe Will Love

The good news? Summer has officially arrived! The bad news? Summer is so hard on your hair. From chlorine encounters to high-humidity frizz, there are countless ways for a bad hair day to turn into a bad hair season. But have no fear. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite summer hair products to turn those scorched strands into the mermaid waves of your dreams.

The Best Summer Hair Products Under the Sun

1. Hair & Scalp SPF

coola scalp and hair mistYou layer sunscreen underneath your makeup or wear an SPF-infused foundation religiously. Great – just don’t forget to protect your hair and scalp while you’re at it. Try an antioxidant-rich hair mist that blocks the sun’s harsh rays while also boosting your overall hair health. This organic option from COOLA actually locks in your hair color, diminishes dullness, and deeply moisturizes for glossy locks from root to tip. Even better? It’s water-resistant for up to 80 minutes.

3. A Protective Oil

klorane summer hair productsDreaming of white sandy beaches, saltwater oceans, and plenty of sunshine? A beach getaway may sound heavenly, but salt, sand, chlorine, and UV rays can leave you with hair that’s dry and brittle. Fortunately, a lightweight oil treatment helps you nourish and protect your hair while still enjoying the tropics.

This waterproof option from Klorane harnesses the power of ylang-ylang wax to shield your strands against the elements.

4. A Salt-Free Wave Spray

5. A Color Life Preserver

6. A Refreshing Hair Rinse

2018 Swimwear Styles for Every Body

The greatest season of all is upon us – SUMMER! This means that it’s time to pull out your bikini collection and add some new swimsuits to your stash. Your swimsuit options are not limited to simple triangle bikinis and tie-side bottoms which aren’t always the best for every shape and size. Swimwear has evolved and now you can purchase several different styles that will flatter and accentuate your body type and best suit your personal style at the same time. Here’s a round-up of our favorite swimsuit styles of the summer!

The One-Piece

Beach style has evolved greatly from the teeny-bikini trend that used to occupy the waters. At that time the only people you’d see in a one-piece swimsuit were pregnant women and older ladies. Thankfully that’s all changed- so you no longer need to worry about skipping out on Taco Tuesday before heading to the beach to keep from bloating in your string bikini.

The Thong Bikini

We’re all about feeling confident in your body, this summer and always. If you’re feeling like showing off your booty, there’s a thong bikini for that!

The Bandeau Bikini

Perfect for tanning, this swimsuit keeps the dreaded tan lines at bay and will also flatter those with smaller chests. Another effect of the bandeau bikini is actually minimizing the chest, so it will even work for larger-chested women (just be careful of the dreaded nip slip).

The Halter Bikini

You may think that buying bikinis as a woman with a bigger bust would be super challenging, but the truth is that it becomes a lot easier when you know what will flatter your body the most and will keep ‘the girls’ in place. Halter bikinis are perfect for large-busted women as they tie around the neck and help to lift and support your breasts while the extra coverage keeps you feeling carefree and comfortable.

The Push Up Bikini

Where we’d rather be, in the Double Band Envy Push Up ☀ #vodaswim

A post shared by Voda Swim (@vodaswim) on

This sexy style speaks for itself and needs no explanation! You can never go wrong with a good push up bikini- whether you’re small or large-chested, or somewhere in between!

The High-Waisted Bikini

High-waisted pieces have recently become super popular, and bikinis are no exception. The great thing about these bikinis is that they suit and flatter just about every body type.

The ‘High Cut’ Swimsuit

Possibly the trendiest swimsuit of this summer is the Baywatch-esque swimsuits with high cut legs (insert Pamela Anderson slow-mo’ running down the beach visual). This style comes in one-piece and two-piece options and works to elongate your legs and slim your waist… who wouldn’t want that??

The Tan-Through Swimsuit

Hello Friday ! @alexacollins

A post shared by blankkini tan through swimwear (@blankkini) on

Did you know that there are swimsuits that you can tan through?? While I’m definitely all about protecting yourself from the harmful rays of the sun, I’m also about getting a little summer glow sans tan lines. These swimsuits are made with a fabric that basically works like a medium level SPF sunblock so you can achieve a seamless tan all summer long!

The Tankini

The tankini is the best option for those who like a little more coverage in their swimsuit options but might love the freedom of wearing two separate pieces. Those with longer torsos will also benefit from rocking a tankini because if you have a long torso and have ever worn a one-piece bikini, you know the struggle – no explanation necessary.

How to Contour Your Whole Body with Self Tanner

There’s an old saying, ‘if you can’t tone it, tan it’ and if you’re anything like me (a junk food addict) your summer body goals may not have been achieved as quickly as you would have liked. I’m all about using tricks to up my confidence whenever possible, so I started contouring using makeup to define my features. I started out by contouring my face and graduated to contouring my cleavage and collarbones on special occasions to make them pop! For a more ‘I woke up like this’ look, learn now just how to contour your face and body with self-tanner so you can look flawless all summer long, no makeup necessary!

First things first: shower, exfoliate, and moisturize your body. Apply a light- to medium-colored self-tanning mousse all over your face and body. (If you’re already a bronzed-goddess feel free to skip that last part.)

FACE CONTOURING

Don’t forget to contour for YOUR face shape ✨ #contour #howtocontour #faceshapematters #howtomakeup

A post shared by ChelZ (@artistrybychelz) on

Use a contouring makeup brush to apply your favorite dark self-tanning mousse in the shape of a ‘3’ on your face. Start by applying a small amount of mousse onto your brush (my all-time favorite self-tan is the Loving Tan Express Mousse) and dabbing the excess product onto a piece of tissue or paper towel so you don’t use too much product. Place the brush along your natural cheekbones and apply the product, making sure to blend well so you aren’t left with any harsh lines. Then, drag the product along your jawline to create the appearance of a stronger jaw. Lastly, apply mousse around the edges of your forehead – be careful not to go too close to your hairline, especially if you have light hair. Don’t forget to do lots of blending with both the brush and your fingers to ensure a flawless finish.

CLEAVAGE CONTOURING

Use the same contouring brush to apply mousse to your cleavage. Simply follow the natural lines of your body. You should be applying the product in between and on top of your breasts in the shape of a ‘Y’ to accentuate your natural shape. Next, apply tan just above and just below your collarbones to make them pop. I also like to apply contour to the front of my shoulders in a circle shape. Again, make sure to blend everything so there are no visible lines, only soft shadows.

LEG CONTOURING

Lift your knee up, (I like to bend my leg and place it on the bathroom counter) and examine the way your muscles naturally look. Follow the lines of your legs along your inner and outer thigh. The line on your inner thigh should be slightly curved into your leg and the line on the outside of your leg should be straight. For best results, use a large mirror so you can see how the finished product will look full-scale.

WAIST CONTOURING

Draw a vertical line down the center of your stomach, from your sternum to your bellybutton. Next, draw horizontal lines across your stomache to create the appearance of abs! Blend, blend, blend!

BUTT CONTOURING

Apply self-tanner to the bottom of your butt cheeks in a half circle shape, this will add shadow and will create the appearance of a lifted bum!

While designer bikinis can get pretty pricey, the majority of bikinis on the market are inexpensive and super stylish. We’ve rounded up some bikinis from our fav celebs of the moment and found similar styles so you can steal the same looks! Happy shopping!

7 Summer Essentials You Need in Your Purse

The travel size section of any drugstore is my kryptonite. For some reason, seeing my favorite beauty products in tiny little bottles gets me really excited. While these mini items are perfect for traveling, they’re also perfect to keep in your purse or beach bag on the daily, especially in the summer when you’ll be needing extra products like SPF, dry shampoo, deodorant, and more. Read on to see our list of everything you need to keep in your purse this summer!

Makeup Removing Wipes

There’s nothing worse than being unprepared for an impromptu pool party, or being the girl that can’t get her face wet because she’ll turn into a mascara-running mess.  That’s where makeup-removing wipes save the day. I’m a proud cake-face. I can’t imagine leaving the house without makeup on and I do my makeup the same way everyday; it doesn’t matter whether I’m going grocery shopping or going out for the night. Makeup removing wipes are essential if you’re anything like me, so you can move through your day with your slayed makeup and take it off on the go when it’s time for some fun in the sun.

Dry Shampoo

Superficially, dry shampoo is one of the most important summer essentials. The weather is hot and sticky, and unless you’re Beyoncé (because she has magical powers) your hair is bound to suffer in the heat and become more prone to oiliness. Lucky for you, tons of dry shampoo products come in travel size items that are perfect to pack in your purse for those on-the-go moments when your hair needs a little refresh. Simply spray the product in your roots and rub it in with your fingers- I like to flip upside down when I do this to add a little extra volume!

Sunscreen

Something not-so-superficially important is sunscreen! While it may seem obvious to apply sunscreen when you’re planning to spend time in the sun, not all of us do, and we definitely don’t reapply like we should. I find that it’s helpful to always have some sunscreen with me, so I’m always reminded to re-apply throughout the day. My latest favorite sunscreen product is a powder sunscreen that’s formulated to protect the skin on your face, it can be applied on it’s own or on top of your makeup and is perfect for touch ups throughout the day. Bonus: SPF has all kinds of ant-aging benefits!

Oil Blotting Sheets

Summer can bring out the best in us (a glowing tan, more energy, etc.) and it can also bring out the worst (sweat and oily skin.) Even if you’re not prone to having oily skin, you’re bound to become a sweaty mess this summer, on more than one occasion. That’s where oil-blotting sheets come in handy. Oil blotting sheets work to remove excess oil and sweat from your face while keeping your makeup in tact. These will be especially useful when you’re the bridesmaid in 40 weddings this summer.

Keep calm and blot on. 😎 | Link in bio to shop our Dependably Clear Blotting Sheets.

Spray Deodorant

I think that this point speaks for itself. Summer -> sweat -> smell (unless you pack a travel size deodorant that is.) I always use and recommend spray deodorants because I can’t stand the sticky feeling of regular stick deodorant, especially in the hot weather.

Hydrating Spray

Another one of my favorite beauty hacks is rosewater!  It’s super hydrating and helps to give me an energy boost when my day is dragging. It also helps to keep my makeup looking smooth and flawless throughout the day. Several beauty brands have come up with hydrating mists that include ingredients like rose petals, aloe, and Vitamin E.

Lip Balm

If you don’t have 102 lip balms in 102 different purses, you should. Bonus points if your lip balm contains SPF, because the harmful rays of the sun can do so much damage to our skin, especially the skin on our lips because it’s so much thinner. Lip balm also is amazing to apply over top of liquid lipsticks that tend to dry out our lips, especially in the hot weather when our lips are dry enough as it is!

5 of the Best Movies to Get You Ready for Summer

While summer doesn’t officially start until mid-June, many regard this weekend as the unofficial beginning of the season. If you’re not spending the next few days at barbecues or Memorial Day parades – maybe because you’re saving money, or you’ve got too much work to do, or perhaps you’re just more of a homebody – why not get into the summer mood in the comfort of your own abode?

Since your schedule is likely to be full of social get-togethers the next few months, these might be your last few days to chill on the couch and stream movies without your phone blowing up with pool party and outdoor trip invites. So take advantage of the calm before the summer (that’s not quite the saying, but just go with it), with this list of movies to get you ready for our favorite season of the year.

Blue Crush

Kate Bosworth plays Anne Marie, a girl in her 20s living with her best friends in paradise (Hawaii) and surfing every single day – but it isn’t all as fun as it sounds. She struggles to get by on little pay and is responsible for her younger pre-teen sister as her parents are no longer in the picture.

via GIPHY

This all changes when she meets a dreamy football player vacationing on the island who treats her to a luxurious escape from her reality. While this may sound a little reminiscent of Pretty Woman, Anne Marie isn’t looking to be rescued. Without giving away too much, we can say that this is not a Cinderella story, but it does have a happy – and empowering – ending, all against the beautiful backdrop of crashing waves and beautiful sunsets.

via GIPHY

Make a night of it: Get the girls together and start with some pina coladas! A short list of ingredients – cream of coconut, rum (although, just as delicious without alcohol), and fresh pineapple chunks – blended together makes a simple and refreshing treat. Prepare some Hawaiian pork tenderloin and guava cake for dessert and you’ve got a mini (and simple) Hawaiian vacation right at home.

Couples Retreat

Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, and Jon Favreau are just a few of the big names you’ll find in this hilarious movie. It’s about four couples who signed up for the island trip of a lifetime, but are unknowingly forced into therapy instead.

via GIPHY

Many of the issues they face are pretty typical of LTRs but you’ll still be laughing until you cry at some of the hilarious (some likely ad-libbed) portrayals of them. You’ll also become more and more obsessed with the idea of visiting French Polynesia as the movie was shot almost entirely in Bora Bora.

via GIPHY

Make a night of it: If you’re part of a couple, this is a funny one to watch with – you guessed it – another couple, or a few. Throw together some Bahama Mamas, another uncomplicated tropical drink. Since you’ve got a group, take the opportunity to play some games that work best with multiple people. A simple one to put together without anything more than some paper and pens is Pictionary (like Vince Vaughn did in another of his hilarious movies, The Breakup, albeit unsuccessfully in the film).

Make your game island themed! Just write down anything island-related you can think of on different pieces of paper, split teams up, and take turns pulling from a bowl. The Bahama Mamas won’t make you any better of an artist but you’ll certainly end up with some amusing depictions of hula girls at the end of the night.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

The 90s were great for scary movies, and everyone we know saw (and loved) I Know What You Did Last Summer. It was scary, it was funny (the killer had a hook for a hand and the movie itself was a “lesson” in teen responsibility), and it had all our favorite 90s actors, like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Ryan Philippe, and Jennifer Love Hewitt (her, spinning in circles yelling “What are you waiting for!?” is something 90s kids will never forget).

via GIPHY

It did so well, they even made a sequel, with an exceptionally imaginative title, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. There was even a third, straight-to-DVD film, I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, but we didn’t see that one. Heck, just watch them all; it’s a long weekend!

via GIPHY

Make a night of it: Get your friends together, because scary movies are more fun with people to scare, and turn the lights down low. If you’re the inspired type of host, theme it up with Blood Orange Margaritas (killers are out for blood, you know) and treat your guests to a frightening dessert with a Red Velvet Slaughter Cake.

Dazed and Confused

It’s the 70s and school’s out for summer (or forever?) – what are you going to do? The same question runs through every high school kid’s mind, whether you’re a jock, a stoner, a cheerleader, a freshman… the list goes on.

via GIPHY

With an all-star cast (Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey, and Joey Lauren Adams, to name a few) and just as star-studded and amazing a soundtrack, the film is one of our favorite summer movies ever. Even Quentin Tarantino has it on his list of the 10 Greatest Films of All Time.

via GIPHY

Make a night of it: This isn’t a night for fancy drinks or hors d’oeuvres, and you don’t need a keg; but you might want beers and plain old relaxation on the couch with your buddies. Don’t bother inviting your stuffy friends; they just won’t get it.

Eat, Pray, Love

If warm weather makes you feel like traveling, this film may add some places to your bucket list. In Eat, Pray, Love, a film adapted from the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Gilbert, Julia Roberts plays Liz (yes, the author), a woman who seemingly “had it all” who becomes lost in her own life through a series of life-altering events and travels the world to find herself.

via GIPHY

The title refers to how she split up her time, with “eat” being in Italy (yum!), “pray” in India, and “love” in Bali. Eat, Pray, Love covers the span of more than one season, but it all feels very summer to us. Plus, even just dreaming of a few months in some of the most amazing places on the planet is enough to make it on this list of must-see pre-summer movies.

via GIPHY

Make a night of it: You’ve got so many options with this one, but you’re likely going to enjoy this most with one of your best friends, perhaps one with whom you could see yourself traveling the world! Start with Amaro al Frescos, a cocktail made with Peroni (a beer brewed in Roma, Italy). Then, try your hand at Indian food for your entrée with Lamb Vindaloo. Finally, satisfy your sweet tooth (and end your around-the-world journey) with some Indonesian Banana Fritters.

10 Must-Have Swimsuits Perfect for the Pool

Summer: wind-blown hair, sandy toes, salty kisses. You can shake the sand from your flip flops, but you’ll never be able to shake it from your soul. Take a deep breath of salty air because we’ve rounded up ten swimsuits that’ll help you stay chic even in the heat.

Best Western Mountain Town Summer Festivals

Out here in the west, we do things a little differently. And we’re okay with it. Sure, you’ve got your Lollapalooza and your Bonnaroo on the east coast, but we’ve got plenty of music—and, not to mention, mountains, rivers, deserts, and some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country.

Whether you’re turned off by the fashion show that has become Coachella, or are more into festivals that include camping, hiking, and other outdoor adventures, there’s something for everyone out here in the Rocky Mountain region. From celebrating whitewater rafting and community in central Colorado to jamming out to the nation’s best bluegrass acts at the base of a ski resort in Wyoming, consider some of the best mountain town summer festivals.

Music on the Mesa

Taos, NM

Located across from the Taos Regional Aiport, between sagebrush and the Rio Grande on its namesake mesa, is Taos Mesa Brewing, HQ for the second annual Music on the Mesa. Resembling the funky, eco-inspired architecture of neighboring funky earthships, and featuring two outdoor stages, the brewery itself is a spectacle—and the beer brewed on site and food ain’t so bad either.

Due to its rather isolated location, and its inevitable cosmic vibes, the festival is admittedly going to be out there. However, those looking for a truly unique location will be more than impressed with the desert sunsets over the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.

Bonanza Campout

River’s Edge, Heber, Utah

Nestled near the old mining town of Park City, River’s Edge is a secluded area perfect for the brand-new Bonanza experience. The weekend will merge live music and local art installations with local breweries and eateries.

Telluride Bluegrass Festival

Telluride, CO

One of the nation’s premier bluegrass experiences, Telluride Bluegrass Festival is an unforgettable four days of music, mountains, and magic. Nestled in in the historic mountain town in southwest Colorado, the Telluride Bluegrass has evolved into one of the crown jewels of all summer festivals.

Need proof? Every June, droves of festivalgoers make the annual pilgrimage to the isolated but breathtaking box canyon.

FIBArk

Salida, CO

River rats unite! FIBArk is the nation’s oldest whitewater festival. Located at the base of the Rockies and on the banks of the mighty Arkansas River in the charming mountain town of Salida, the unique festival features all sorts of river and land events. Above all, the family-friendly event highlights the tight-knit Coloradan community.

Not sure what to expect? Competitions such as the Downriver Race—the longest, oldest, and perhaps toughest whitewater race in the country—and Freestyle Kayak competition test participants’ athleticism and fearlessness. Events such as the Raft Rodeo, which hands out awards “for nothing but silly moves,” and the Hooligan Race, open to anything that floats and is not a boat, highlights ingenuity and innovation with a healthy smattering of absurdity.

International Climber’s Festival

Lander, WY

A celebration of the climbing lifestyle, the International Climber’s Festival draws dirtbags (we use that term lovingly, of course) from all across the world for a weekend of climbing clinics and competitions, art, food, music, and beer. Never been to a climbing-specific event and unsure what to expect? Climbers of all abilities can find something, from classes on gear and strength training to more intensive bouldering and lead climbing clinics.

To keep festival-goers busy between getting vertical, the dog-friendly festival features morning yoga, trail runs, live music, and happy hours. The weekend also features talks, panel discussions, and some of the climbing community’s well-known athletes.

Targhee Fest and Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival

Alta, WY

Anyone who has ever laid eyes on the imposing, jagged Teton mountain range knows that the place has a magical draw to it. And for the past several decades, Grand Targhee Resort has been giving music lovers two reasons to revisit the northwestern corner of Wyoming: for both Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival and Targhee Fest. Drawing on the spirit of music, mountain-town charm, and sustainability, these festivals bring together food, music, and outdoor culture for two separate occasions.

The Grand Targhee Blue Grass Festival is considered the grand daddy of bluegrass festivals in the Northern Rockies. No matter your musical preference, the festivals are one of the prime escapes to hang out in the shadows of the Tetons. Divide Music Festival

Winter Park, CO

Located a short drive from Denver in the ski town of Winter Park, Divide Music Festival uses the splendor of the Continental Divide as a background and highlights some huge national acts. The outdoor festival features some of Colorado’s best craft beers, local food selections and artisans and promises to be one hell of a party.

Reserve a camp spot, and be sure to pack up your mountain bike and hiking shoes—thanks to flowing rivers, scalable mountain peaks, and lush valleys, Winter Park is a veritable summer playground.

Vertex Festival

Buena Vista, CO

This festival aims to create “a modern-day frontier where anything is possible.” Surrounded by snow-capped 14,000-foot mountains at the foot of the Continental Divide on a sprawling ranch, Vertex definitely has prime real estate. However, its eclectic array of hip-hop, DJs, and rock bands will convince music fans that the festival boasts more than a pretty location.

Above all, community-minded Vertex plans to showcase the best of Colorado, including music, art, and outdoor adventures.
